  • BBC in a 99 Camaro

Hello, I am new to the boards and am in need of a couple of answers. I am putting a 468 bbc in my 99 camaro, I need to know if there is any special parts i will need? I am going to get a subframe from BMR and trans crossmember as well from BMR. I need to know if there are headers made for this conversion? I have a 77 Trans Am that the motor is currently in and I was told that the headers from a 2nd gen bbc will fit? Can the fuel pump be bypassed or do I need to run a fuel cell? I am a mechanic , so I am able to do the work , but I would like to know of any probs I may run into! Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also I will be running a 400 trans, the motor has about 650 hp, ran mid 11's in the T/A, so it should move in the 99. Thanx alot.

There is nothing like a big block for brute power. Small blocks are great and can be made to run extremely well, but for all out strength and power you can't beat a BB. Go to the drags and look at what powers most of the bracket dragsters. About 80% run BB Chevs because of the power and reliability. Good luck with your project, let us know what it runs. It sounds like a great combo.

The biggest challenge will be clearing the cowl depending on what type of intake and distributor setup you will running. I had to clearance my cowl quite a bit with a injected 4500 dominator setup. I'm not to sure if 2nd Gen specific BBC headers will work on a 4th gen, but you might post this question over on the BB section over on ls1tech.com. Surely somebody over there knows. We just had some custom made from Kooks.

In regards to the stock fuel pump....yank it. Even if you run an external in-line pump, you will still be restricted by the stock pump since you are literally sucking the fuel through it. You can modify an earlier 4th Gen metal tank with a sump and AN fittings, but it might be easier to just order a pre-fabbed aluminum sump cell from some place like Charged Air Systems. They make pre-fabbed aluminum sump cells that go in the factory tank location and use the factory tank straps. The CAS build quality is top notch.

Test fitting a 413" LT1 with injected Dominator 4500 setup. That is a dummy block used to test for cowl and hood and midplate clearance:
