  • Check engine light

Alright guys my car through the Check Engine Light two days ago, right as I was parking it and I didn't think much of it. Well I drove it last night and it came back on, I don't have a scanner I'm thinking it may be low on Antifreeze though since its starting to get really cold here. The check Oil light came on then went off to I bet thats also from the car being cold. Anyone got any ideas? It's still runs fine and sounds good. When I popped the hood last night I could smell a little antifreeze burning so any Ideas?

Need some basic info, like the year of the car and the engine. Almost impossible to help without knowing at least that.

The PCM can not tell how much antifreeze you have, it can not tell what the coolant level it, as long as it's an F-Body, it can't tell what the oil level is or what the oil pressure is. What year has a "check oil" light?

You need to get it scanned to find out what the code/SES light is for. Without that, its just a giant guessing game. Some years can be checked for trouble codes without a scanner.

He probably means change oil. F-bodies don't have a check oil light. To reset it just press and hold the mileage reset button for about 7 seconds and it the light will flash telling you it's been reset. Don't follow by it...change your oil every 3K.

About your coolant issues...as Injuneer stated, low coolant can't trip a SES light. That's "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" by the way...not check engine. Get a scanner on it...or take it to Autozone. I believe some Advance locations does scans now also.

It's the only sure way of figuring out what is setting off your SES light.

SES is most often due to an emission problem of some type. Fill the gas tank recently? make sure the cap is tight. anu exhaust pipe or muffler work? cat work? check the code but consider these items too.

Well I decided to check the easy ones first and found my gas cap partially unscrewed I think someone may have been trying to syphon the gas out of my tank....is a big problems around here so seems about right I also did put only 87 in it instead of 89 so that may have helped to contribute to that. But either way its out now so I'm happy.

had the gas cap problem on my old 92 RS fairly often. Never seemed to quite screw in right. BTW, my 21 yar old son is still driving the RS--it's at 210,000 miles right now and running strong as ever.
