  • rear end question

I had a loud banging accompanied by a whine on deceleration coming from the rear end that was louder and more noticeable when turning with the clutch engaged. I brought it to a transmission shop and was told it was the posi unit. They said to replace that it was going to cost a grand total of $2500. I called back and asked for a quote with 3.73s installed while they were already in there with it apart. I don't know what else they have to replace whether it be axles, gears, bearings. Any info is helpful. They also told me they were gonna put in an eaton rear. I thought thats what came with the car....HELPPPPP!!!!!!

$2500??!! That is the most insane price I've ever seen. The stock 10 bolt is not worth upgrading. It is too weak to hold much power beyond stock. You're better off ditching it and getting a Strange or Moser 12 bolt. The cost will be around $2200-$2500. They come with 31 to 33 spline axles, a heavy duty posi, no c-clips, and can take so much more abuse. If you go with the Strange, it comes fully assembled and lubed. It's nearly a direct bolt in. For Moser, you'll have to get the bearings pressed on the axles.
I went with a Moser 9" and it costed me around $2500, however, I did the install all by myself.

If you're leaning towards repairing the current rear, I'm sure you can get a better deal than $2500 for repair.

You're young and they're trying to scam you.

You can get a complete 12 bolt like the dude said above for less than the repair cost. See a different shop or if you got the cash go with the 12 bolt.

I think they know that and they are trying to rip you off. Try another shop.
It's doubtful you need axles, I would tend to doubt everything that shop tells you. Normally a whine is due to improper backlash of the ring rear.

How many miles on the car?

I believe my 3.73 gears and differential rebuild kit was about $350. That included all the bearings and shims, fluids, etc...... I paid about another $200 for the install as that's a PITA unless you have all the proper tools. Even with the tools it's a pain. FYI, a posi install is a piece of cake, so I say you're getting ripped. you could do a little searching with your local boneyards and find a complete rear assembly for less than $500 and have it installed. That leaves another $2000 to pay for a rental over the next???? I know there are places just over the bridge in NJ that would do it much cheaper.
