I just received the radio I ordered for my Z. I got it online from a guy on Ebay. I just plugged it in and it sounds like it is only preamp output level. The sound is very quiet, I need to turn it all the way up to hear it quietly.

This unit is dated April 24 1995, and does NOT say Delco/Bose on it anywhere. I assume this is the regular CD player, with built in amp. Am I wrong?? Do I need to run an amp to use this? If so, that is no big deal, I have a Soundstream Reference 405 sitting around.

The back of the unit has 3 plugs on it. 1) The antenna. 2) the standard delco 4part pin plug. 3) a singe plug with 6 pins

If this unit is only preamp out and I need to use the soundstream, what are the pin-outs I need?

The car chasis only has 2 plugs to the radios 3. The antenna, and the Delco 4part pin plug.

    what is that 3rd plug??

    All help is appreciated!!

Does it look like this? I'm 99% sure that the amp is on the speaker. Does your speakers have a little amp on them?

    See if this helps.

My Bad. The radio does have a Delco/Bose logo on the front. It is polished off the display and barely visable except if viewed very closely with the light at the right angle. SO, you are right. This radio came out of a car with the little amplifiers in the speakers. My speakers do not have the little amps.. But, I have my BIG soundstream... How do I wire this bad boy in now? Do you have a picture of the pin outs on the back of this radio??

That link above has a picture of the wiring harness. If you look closely, it has the wire color on the schematic. It's the best I can do.

Soundstream makes a great amp. Unfortunately, in order to use it, you are going to have to get new speakers or disable the built in amps. If you leave them on and put the Soundstream inbetween, you will either blow the amps (or the Soundstrem, but this is doubtful) or you will at best have extreme distortion.

I would go ahead and do speakers and be done with it. The only thing is, if your soundstream does not have the speaker inputs (oldschool/pre-RCA inputs) you will need to upgrade the head unit as well. You will get better sound quality and a better pre-amp output this way anyhow.

Net Net, there's no easy fix, the bit*h about stereos is once you add one component, you have to match the rest....

I went down and plugged it in the car again to test the CD player. It says error and spits the CD back out. I sent the guy I bought it from a request to return it and avoid getting flamed with negative feedback. I hope he takes this chance to make things right.

My car does NOT have the amps on the speakers. It has regular speakers wired directly to the headunit. The bose headunit has line level outputs. It would work fine into an amp. Trust me. I'd just need to know the leads. In light of the CD not working, this is all a non issue.

Thanks to all for the prompt attempts to help, though!!

When you say line level outputs, are these RCA's? What year is this unit? Just wondering, never looked at my '01 Suburban headunit, have a couple amps laying around, would not mind hooking them up...

Yes, by line level I mean RCA. Now, granted the back of the radio just has the stupid GM connector and you will need to slice and dice your own RCA cables on to the pin-outs.

Now, bear in mind, only the "Bose" units are set up like this with line level outputs. This is because the amps are located on the speakers. The "non-bose" units have speaker level outputs because they have built in amps.

OK, that's what I thought.... this is what I saw when I tore apart my Camaro unit... I did not think GM put RCA outs on the backs, but I thought maybe it was an option on the newer models. I guess it was wishful thinking. Good luck with the radio..

The jerk decided to screwed me. I left him a really nasty negative feedback. I HATE people with no honor.

Nope. I gave him a chance to make good and he refused. He said sold as is. BUT the auction said it worked.

I believe in carma. He will get his someday. I like the "pay it forward" philosophy. If you are nice to you fellow man, you will be repayed ten fold. So far it has worked. This is the first time I have been screwed in a long time.

Every once in a while, my CD player will do that. I put in a cleaner disc, run it for a few seconds, and it starts working again.

BTW I'm sorry to hear about this guy. I refuse to buy anything off of EBay for this reason. I can't believe people buy cars, motorcycles, boats, etc off of Ebay sight unseen.
