  • Talon vs Firebird

My friend just got a 96 talon awd with a turbo. It is stock except for the stupid sounding ricer exhaust he put on it which sounds like a wet fart. I'll give it to him that its fast but he keeps telling me he'll kill me in a race. He wanted to race the other night but I told him to wait till we can get to the drags saturday. I know talons are quick especially off the line but I shouldn't have anything to worry about should I? I know what i'm doing at the drags and my best time is a 13.98 I told him he won't be close. I'm right and he's just a ricer talking crap, right?

Is it the stock car with a stock turbo or is it aftermarket? Has he turned up the boost? Is this the new body style or the old? Can't remember when they cut over. If it's the old, you are more than all set.

If all he has is the fart tip, you should take him pretty easily.

        watch yourself Tito!

First off, the exhaust doesn't sound like a ricer's. They have something muffling the tone that ricers don't have -- A TURBINE.

Second off, it will be a very close race. If all he has is an exhaust, I'm guessing catback? You should beat him if you do a quarter mile. If you do to 60 or whatever, and he can launch good, he'll probably beat you.

I think you have a misconception of what rice is. Rice is when someone makes their car out to be fast - stickers, wing, fart cannon, body kit, lights, etc., when it's really not fast.

Talons aren't to be taken lightly. I just sold my 95 AWD and it took down LS1's like they were going out of style. They deserve more respect than you're showing. That 13.98 timeslip won't hold up to him when he puts an intake, a boost controller, and a fll turbo back exhaust on.

The cars can be made insanely fast for a little money. This is my old one. It would run circles around your 13.98.

I agree that the newer model Talon Turbo's are fast, and can be modified to be very fast. If you are relatively stock, you should be careful, driving ability will carry you a long way.

I am in the same boat, don't want to start anything, but...., as far as the rice thing goes. Generally speaking, in most people's minds, the Talon is basicaly a Mitzubishi, I don't see a whole lot of these with anything other than lights, wings, and stickers and if you went to a car show or to the track, they would more than likely be placed among the ricers and not with the muscle cars.

On a totally different note, I can't stand the way these things sound, If you soley judged thie car on sound alone definitely places it into the rice category....

Regardless of the body style, you better watch out. There is a mod you can do that uses some part from a fish tank (I am not making this up). This allows them to up the boost to like 17-18 psi, and that is your LT1 butt. I've got a buddy of mine with a slight turbo upgrade and a REAL boost controller, and on race gas he's running the exact same 1/8th mile times as my sprayed LT1. If he's bone stock, it will be close. If he's got that fish tank part, that's your butt.

You cannot compare a modified talon to a stock camaro. If you want to talk modified talons, we get to talk modified camaros. Lets take a 2002 SS and put a supercharger on it with long style headers and a catback exhaust. BLA BLA BLA, Bla Bla.!!!

Apples to apple my friend!! Which car would win STOCK? I bet a hopped up Yugo with a 502 in it could beat a 2002 SS... It's a stupid argument, so why have it. see my point?? Any car can be made fast. Bragging your modified car can beat my stock one is pointless.

The point is that a bone stock Turbo Talon was a high 14's car. With cheap and easy mods it will be in the 13's. If you have ZR's and tach 2nd and 3rd, you have a fair chance. It's going to be close.

Dude, all I was saying is that the Talon is not to be messed with. I know that mods make the table turn. But the fact is, HE runs a 13.98, No faster.. Just was saying that the Talon will be very close. It's stupid to argue about cars being modded... But the fact is, he is what he is - 13.98. That's all. Like $500 in mods and the talon wins. That's all I'm saying.

This thread is starting to get out of line. The post with "someone of talking out their -you know what-" in my call was not within the rules of not starting a flame war. If this stuff continues in this thread, it will be locked..............

Sorry, wasn't trying to start anything like I said. It just bugs me about how mis-informed some people are. When someone starts a thread barking ricer this, ricer that, and talking about cars that deserve respect, then it gets under my skin a little bit.

If he was to talk about a honda with stickers I'd agree.

Formula Vs Talon AWD (DSM Domestic form)...I'd put my money on the Talon. Not trying to start anything...but I seen way too many F-bodies that get wasted by one. Even in stock form, a DSM can gun out of the line like a bullet...a Formula would end up beating it at the end, but out of the box to 40-50, the DSM got it.

Not trying to start anything or flame, but I'm just letting the truth out. If it was me and my TA against a Eclipse GSX that is modded...I'd think twice. It's a no joke machine...

Oh, if you're running a 13.98...you can bet that the DSM will be right beside you in the 1/4, if you screwup-it's over.

                          OK here's my 2 cents,
stock for stock the LT1 would pull away after 2nd gear because I've done it versus both Turbo Talon's and Eclipses. that's if you get a good launch if not that's where the AWD has an advantage. but after 2nd and third i just pulled away. now for modified eclipse I also raced an eclipse with bigger turbo, boost controller, blow off valve, tires and wheels, exhaust, cams, intake and the outcome was the same but this was after i has installed march pullies,Granatelli maf, functional ram air hood(firehawk style) k&n filter, ferco pipe, air foil,Borla 3" y-pipe,single hi flo cat,SLP loudmaouth, hypertech tuning,GM 3.73 gears, TA rear end cover, 17x9 02' SS wheels with f1 rubber, i run a best of 14.32 at 103mph elevation here in EL PASO TEXAS %^$#@, he, he. it all comes down to how much money you have. any car can be made to run 12's

Superchargers and turbos definitely make a car quick. Shoot, my friend's little Dodge Daytona Turbo Z that he got back in the 80s moved; he played with the turbo and opened it up for $0 investment. Anyhow, you could burn the tires off of that thing. I am still disappointed that GM never put out a supercharged LS1, because they are unruly. The point is, do you like it or not? When I first drove my '97, I had a grin from ear to ear, and when I get in it 95,000 miles later, I still have a grin from ear to ear. It still feels like an old heavy, RWD, torquey, muscle car that I love; and it still is a perfect fit next to my '79 in the garage. I don't like Mitsubishi or any Asian car for that matter. They are light, flimsy, and just don't feel right to me like my fiancee's old Mits Mirage before we dumped it, but I know that is what some people look for in a car...I prefer the heavy durable cars. When I sat in the Eclipse and 3000; I instantly was turned off on both, and the 3000 GT VR4 is one really fast car, but I would never own one. I don't know which car would win a 1/4 mile race stock; it looks like the 1st & 2nd gen Talon runs mid to high 14s stock while they can be moded to run as low as 11s. All I know is what my car can do, and once I am done with it, it will be a monster...that is all that matters to me.

                              Yup man >>

Those Talon's are QUICK! We have a guy at a Local Speedshop with a Turbo upgrade, NOS, intake, Full turbo catback and a few other mods. This guy HAULS! I'm not sure what his track times are, but he's quick. 13.98 really isn't that quick, and like most people here stated, with VERY minor mods, the Talon will take your LT1. With my 04 WRX STI, I can take MOST LS1/LT1's. I have a few mods, still for my speed shop to get in my bigger turbo, then we'll be running fast! Right now I have boost controller, intake, Full Turbo Catback... Just becareful bro. Don't talk too much crap. I love CAMAROS, I owned one, but I got myself caught a few times laughin at Ricers then getting spanked by them. Just because they have a 4-banger, and you have a big muscle v8, doesn't mean you will necessarily beat them. Heck you could laugh at me at a light, and I'd spank yo a$$!!! It's all about whats under the hood! This is one of my favorite sayings... "The BULL$HIT stops when the green light drops!" Take it to the track and have some fun
