  • Where To Mount a Satellite Radio?

    Hey Everyone.

Like the six-year-old that I am, I had to peek into my Christmas gifts - my wife got me a Sirius Satellite Radio - the Sportster Replay. Where's the best place to mount it?

If it's the all in one unit, I'd recommend getting a Pro-fit mounting bracket, which I actually used to use to hold cradles for handsfree cellphone kits. It mounts next to the radio using factory screws and requires no cutting. The only downside in an f-body is that it tends to hit the knee of the passenger if they have long legs. I have one in my car, and it's been through 3 different car kits, a Nextel, and now holds my GPS unit.

If it's the FM modulated style with the remote mount display, you can put the display wherever you like as the actual tuner part would be mounted in the trunk.

With either unit, it's more than likely going to have an outside antenna. Since there is no sheet metal on the roof of a 4th gen, the magnet style is not going to work. You will have to opt for double stick tape, and I would recommend putting it high up on the rear hatch glass so it's inconspicuous and as high as it can get on the car without actually being on the paint. You could put it on the 1/4 panel if it's magnetic, but you'll encounter more interruptions in service since SUV's and big trucks will block the signal more frequently. You'd be shocked how much difference that 2-2.5 feet can make.

That ram-mount looks really good. I think I'll mount the antenna to the glass like you said. Can't wait to hear it!

My ham radio is a glass mount in the top middle of the rear glass.

I had a stereo place install mine and I had them mount it on the driver side corner of the windshield. It looks pretty cool and it doesn't obstruct my view at all.

The A/C vent mount for my XM Roady 2 wouldnt work in my 93 Firebird...so I simply just made what I wanted. Got some sheet plastic from a hobby shop cut it out, glued it together, painted, and velcroed it in place. I put mine on top of the dash above the first of the 3 A/C vents. At least right there, you can see it well, and its at just the right angle to where you can use the remote control instead of taking your eyes off the road. As for the antenna, I put it at the top of the backglass in the center...just be sure to leave enough room for it so the hatch opens without pulling it off. Good luck finding something that you like.

Just got a Sirius Stiletto and have no clue where I should mount the car unit so it looks like it belongs. I already know where the antenna will go if I install in the Formula (going on the dash as I do not want to install outside the car). If anyone has pics of a satellite radio in their f-bodies, or even an ipod, I'd like to see them. Thanks!

Here are direct links to what I recommended.

                    Pro-fit (the one I have)

                    http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/Adobe/PT-52-94.pdf

Panavise (also highly recommended, I used both products extensively)

                    http://www.panavise.com/f/comm/indas...98327241532233

Out of the way, no holes to drill, no double stick tape, maybe 5 minutes installation time in the real world.

                      MN6WS6,

Thanks for the links, that looks like the only way to go if I wanted to install in the Formula. But, I just can't do it. Wish there was a better solution so it doesn't look like something's sticking out.

I really like the way that mount looks and it's more "out of the way" than sticking it to the windshield.

If I stick it to the windshield, I feel that it's a sitting duck for an amateur thief. The mount makes it somewhat more secure....

Nothing like resurrecting a dead thread!

Just recently installed my Sirius Stiletto 100. Installed the home kit in the ashtray. I think it came out pretty clean. You can't see the antenna (I hid it under the windshield cowl on the passenger side, getting perfect reception there).

Not as exciting as some of the engine project some of you have going, but I finally managed to install my Sirius Radio.

As suggested I used the Pro-Fit bracket to install it next to the radio. I also used the FM Direct Adapter the plugs into the radio antenna and cuts off the signal from the FM antenna when the Sirius is on.

I glued the antenna to the rear hatch.
