Wiper Motor or Something Else

I've noticed that my wipers will not respond once in a while on my 1988. I'll turn them on and they will wipe a couple of times then stop. I turn them off, and they do not respond. The next time I start the vehicle they retract to their rest position. Is the motor going out or is it something else. My wipers do have the delay feature which works fine. The washer also works fine. I rather have an oppinion before I go buy a new motor. Thanks!
