  • Transmission problem on my Blazer

    97 Chevy Blazer 4x4 4door

    Automatic trans is pushing fluid up the vent tube next to the trans dipstick and it is getting on the engine and causing smoke.

    The truck drives fine, no slipping or noise.

    What would cause this? I dont trust it to drive it any distance until I get it fixed!

      Havent added any since I had it changed 6 months ago. Any other ideas?

          Too much fluid can cause this as the rotating assembly churns the fluid, it will froth the fluid and come out the breather. Check the fluid, its possible the cooler broke and antifreeze is being introduced to the trans. Usually it works the other way (trans fluid in the radiator), but I've heard of it happening. Could also be a bad breather??

          Also check to see if the filter has a good seal (drop the pan); if its sucking air, it can cause the fluid to froth.

          Other than that, if its pushing major fluid out, this can be caused by a bad torque convertor. But you would probably have other symtoms as well

            I just spoke with my local tranny guy that rebuilt the awsome tranny in my old 88 Iroc.

            He said this is what happens on this trans when it is overheating. He asked me if I was pulling a load, I said no. He then asked me If I have had the fluid changed lately and how. I told him I had it changed a few months ago via the Valvoline pumpitout system. He said that way of changing it churns up all sorts of debris in the tranny and most likely now the filter is plugged, starving the trans for fluid and causing it to overheat, spitting fluid up the vent. He said also the coolant flow could somehow be plugged by a clogged coolant line.

            I'm going to drop the pan and change the filter. I'll post my results when done.

            I'll also check the radiator for tranny fluid to see if it is leaking there. That is a good idea also.

              I just replaced the filter on the trans and filled er' up to full. What a mess. A 15 min test drive on the highway netted no lost fluid, and no leaks. A little smoke from the fluid that got all over the exhaust, but that stopped after a minute.

              I'll have my wife drive it to work tomorrow and see how it does.

                Cool. So the moral of the story is, if you have your automatic flushed with a pump, have them change the filter too. I've been thinking about having mine done too.

                  update...

                  That vent tube up by the trans dipstick is NOT for the trans. It is for the tranfer case. It was the transfer case spitting fluid out the tube.

                  Why??

                  Because the seal between the trans and the transfer case was shot. Normally the fluids between these 2 pieces stay seperate.
                  Fluid from the trans was leaking into and overfilling the transfer case and causing it to burp up its vent tube.

                  Problem solved, no harm done. I'm sure glad I didnt need to pay for a rebuild!
