  • '97 or '02 B4C?

Hello, I am today's noob putting myself at your mercy
I like the plain wrappers of the B4C Camaros and the goodies in that package. Are there significant mechanical differences between the '97 and earlier and the '98 and newer? I spied the curvy plastic intake on the '98-on. Directing me to a specifications/data page/site would be swell, thanks.

The curvy plastic intake? You do know the 98 and up have an LS1 engine as compared to the LT1 for 93-97, right? Or are you saying you don't know anything about 4th gens altogether?

The latter but wikipedia has just filled me in on the diff. between the LT1 and LS1. The above link was helpful, too. If you were in my shoes, would you go for the iron or aluminum block?

      Thanks

I think much would depend on the price. The 02 would be nice to have. There's more HP right out of the box.

Apparently they sell reconditioned cop cars. You can also get Crown Vics, Impalas, Intrepids, and Tahoes.

          I'd like a B4C, then convert it to a 6m.

Umm, what does B4C mean? I'm clueless here. Geez, some of those reconditioned cop Camaros look nice!
1996 White T/A, LT-1 auto with only aftermarket Flowmasters, shift kit, and a LG Motorsports G2 cold air kit.....that's it! She can't eat all the 'Stangs but will die trying.

B4C = "Special Service Package" = police car, theoretically sold only to actual police departments.

              From the 4th Gen FAQ:
Q: What's included in the B4C police package?

A: According to "The Genuine Camaro White Book" by Michael Antonick, on a 93 Camaro, the B4C "special service" option included:

              -LT1 engine
              -6 speed manual transmission
-3.23:1 ratio limited slip rear axle
-Single exhaust and converter with dual tail pipes
              -16 inch aluminum wheels
              -P245/50ZR16 blackwalls
              -4 wheels disc brakes
-124 amp alternator (140 amp for '94 and on)
              -150 mph speedometer
              -Air conditioning
              -525cca battery
              -Engine oil cooler
              -Performance suspension

The term "performance suspension" refers to the suspension which normally comes on a Z28, as opposed to the suspension which comes on the base non-Z28 Camaro or on the 1LE Z28. One other enticing thing is the package is cheaper than the regular Z28 options in order to give law enforcement and local government a break. Good luck trying to order one though. First, you have to find a dealer who will do a fleet order for you. The B4C is a "special services package" that is only orderable under a fleet number. It has no "stated" restrictions in the order book, but currently Chevy will not build one for a non-police department. And that means providing documentation indicating delivery to a police station.
A lot of the parts listed above are no different than the standard Z28, or could be ordered on the Z28. In effect, the B4C is a Z28 in a "plain wrapper".

True, to a degree- the B4C came with the oil cooler and power steering coolers that were optional on the other Camaros, Z28 included. The early 4th gen B4C got the bigger alternator, but I am pretty sure that wasn't available on the LS1's.

Oh, the standard 6-speed ( and I am pretty sure that tranny came with 3.42 gears) was one option, most B4C's I have seen had the auto- Not sure if they came with auxillary wiring in place for siren, lightbar, etc, but they were usually outfitted with them- they were pursuit cars, after all-

some useful info on http://www.thirdgen.org/ and some of the other "cop car" websites
2001 Z28 A4 - 160 deg t-stat, 3.42 gears, WS6 sway bars, rear springs and shocks, UMI SFC's, Torque Arm and STB, leather Firebird seats, Borla, SLP Y-pipe and lid, ZO6 cam and springs - 332 RWHP and 346 RWTQ, not bad for 'almost stock' - work in progress

Thanks to the posters above for the add'tl info.

Isn't the 4th gen SS also z28 in a plain wrapper? I'm talking to a local dude (Maryland) about his black 6 speed 2000 SS (no t tops )

93-95s had the oil cooler. 96-97s did not (as GM dropped them from the overall LT1 option list).

No power steering coolers were ever an option (93-97) and it appears there was no optional p/s cooler for 98-02, as well.

No 93-97 got a bigger alternator than what was on the stock Z28. 98-02 got the standard alternator, also.

An SS starts as a Z28 and has some added content.

Not to be argumentative, and I am no expert, but I have a friend with a salvage yard 2002 Z28 that came with the PS cooler, and I have seen it on all the NYSP B4C's I have looked at, several of various years, LT1 and LS1. So I am sure they existed and were on the B4C.

GM's own literature mentions the upgraded 140 alternator for the LT1 B4C, presumably to power the extra lights and radios. That part is not available, as far as I have been able to find, for my LS1- and I have looked pretty hard-

I have .pdf files of the B4C pamplets from GM that I could email or upload here for several years-

I understand there is some sort of cooling fins or something on the hard lines of the p/s system on the LS1s, but there is no optional p/s cooler, like I said. Never have I seen a factory p/s cooler on an LT1 (or ever heard of anyone speak of such). There is absolutely nothing in the parts book about it (LT1 or LS1).

GMs literature does mention the 140 amp alt, but all Zs got the same alternator, so it is nothing out of the ordinary and not an added option. LS1 B4Cs got the same 105 amp alt that the normal Zs had.

I have the pdfs of the brochures, too. Read them. They bear out everything I said.

Could you get a LS1 B4C with a T56? Every one I've seen has been an A4, and I'd love to be able to track one down with a manual, just to save the hassle of doing a conversion. Then I could have my LT1 A4 with all the luxuries and a 6spd LS1 stripper

The only B4C in the brochures that did not list the M6 as available was 2002.
