  • Should i get this car?

Alright so i found a 98 z-28 with 134,000 miles on it. The engine was replaced 30,000 miles ago, it has the SS hood, its black, flowmasters, and c5 vette rims. monsoon stereo, new tires, power everything, leather. he's asking $7500 for it. paints good, drives good. What do you guys think?

See if you can get him down closer to 5K.

Hmmm...I sold my '96 Z28 almost 2 years ago for $6,000. The paint was in good condition it was loaded with the exception of Leather and T-tops. It had 130,000 miles on it.

I'd check the alignment of the hood, window motors, and overall condition. Also check the stereo. Check all the speakers to see if they're putting out good sound. Check the Monsoon head unit to make sure it doesn't have any burned out bulbs. Also look at the side bolster on the driver's seat. If there are any issues with these than you could ask for a price reduction.

Also check the transmission closely. If the motor was replaced, that tranny could be the next thing to go - that's why I say get it as cheaply as possible so you have room to fix other issues if they arise. The car sounds nice . . .

Sounds a tiny bit high.. Is it an auto or M6?
Does he have receipts for all work performed?

he does have the reciepts, and its an auto. how long do the auto tranny's typically last on these cars. He said it wasn't abused, he just used it to get him back and forth to work.

I dunno. It's hard to say.. I'd say a new trans is definitely in the future - could be 50k miles could be 50 miles..

                And the 4L60E's aren't cheap!

I just had a new auto tranny put in right after Thanksgiving in my '96 T/A, the rebuild kit was going to cost $900+, and then on top of that labor $$. I got lucky and they sold me a completely redone tranny with a shift kit and steel components for $750 (they love me there anyways ). I paid about $1300 total, which also included a new torque converter as well. I'm sure you could shop around though.

On another note: My '96 has 108K miles, and I have always "babied" the transmission-did all fluid/filter changes respectively every 30K. I was never "hard" on the car, for that matter everything I have is pretty much stock. So as the fellas on this board told me, it is common for these trannys to go about this time (100K+mileage).
1996 White T/A, LT-1 auto with only aftermarket Flowmasters, shift kit, and a LG Motorsports G2 cold air kit.....that's it! She can't eat all the 'Stangs but will die trying.

                    Currently on the clock: 120K

I lost the tranny in my '96 due to a fluid leak that I didn't see in time. I had the leak fixed and lost 4th and 3rd gears about a week later. It had 125k when it went.

That doesn't mean yours won't last a while, but I'd invest in AAA membership and keep a cell phone close.

thanks for the replies and info fellas, other than obvious driving issues is there anything else that i could do to better know the condition of the tranny?

With those mods, its hard for me to believe that he didnt abuse the car. For the most part, people who mod... abuse. How old is the seller?

the only real mod was exhaust, i guess thats what you're refering to.everything else was cosmetic. honestly, he probably drove hard occasionally, i know i would. he's into roadracing though, and said he got his go fast jollies from race car, his wrx sti, and that this car just got to and from work. hopefully. he's young thirties btw.
