  • What is the most horsepower and torque a 10 bolt can handle?

Hi I am installing a 502 crate motor and am wondering how much power and torque a 10-bolt rearend can handle until its time to upgrade to a 12-bolt or 9incher.

It can hadle all kinds of power on street tires. As soon as you get sticky tires in there you will grenade it. Enough power will break anything, and the cheapest thing to break is traction.....

Moser makes complete bolt in 9" Ford or 12 bolt for the F body. It is the safe way to go. With traction that 502 will snap that 7.5 rear like a twig.

There isn't a set number as some cars are running on slicks and some on street tires. However, a car with an automatic will put less shock on the rear and it will normally last longer.

An 8.5 inch ring gear 10 bolt will handle a suprising amount of power. I was able to make it live with 550 HP with no trouble. The smaller the gearset though, the less torque it will handle. The 10 bolt 8.5 incher is no slouch.

Other than Joe, most of the people above seem to be forgetting that GM made "10-bolt" rear axle assemblies in 3 different sizes (7.5/7.625", 8.20" and 8.50"). Its the 3rd and 4th Gen's that have the flimsy 7.5/7.625" rears. His 1980 should have the 8.5" 10-bolt.

I have seen some pretty fast b-bodies (Caprice/Impala etc.) on there stock 8.5 rear ends... And they are north of 2 ton.

amen...you have any pics of your gnx clone? I like your black theme btw. I just had my 87 gn stolen a month ago, and im thinking about a black lsi camaro. Do you think i'll like an f-body after having a gn for so long?

Sure thing. I've got several sets of wheels, here's a pic of the typical all black GNX theme:

Here's the car with Centerline Champ 500s:

As far as will you like an f-body? They are radically different than the GNs. The f-body handles much better, the Gn is more like the muscle cars of old. Like apples and oranges broh. Get one and you won't be disappointed.

In short, pretty much everything. The only thing I think that's still stock under the hood is the fuel rail. Everything from a block girdle, cam, heads, forged rotating assembly, etc. It's a nice street/strip torque monster...low 10s at 128 still on the stock 8.5 inch 10 bolt.

The car is an automatic, but i might convert it to a stick, that might affect whether or not to stay with the 10" or upgrade.
