  • Fuel pump replacement?

    First off, 1991 RS 3.1 V6...

I've got the Haynes repair manual, but the procedure seems a little shaky in description.

I can't exactly say that I'm too comfortable with balancing the rear end on a floor jack while trying to wrestle the gas tank out from above...Also, I'm not exactly comfortable with the fact of compressing the coil springs with a floor jack to remove them, either.

So my question is, is there a safer method? Any advice?

I've changed several fuel pumps before, just never in a Camaro.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The rear coil springs dont really pose any threat to you. They are nowhere near as stiff as the fronts. As far as balancing the rear on a jack... You dont really have to do that while your getting the tank out. Just lower the rear all the way to the floor & have some blocks of wood down there for the rear to rest on. I dont know what parts the manual says to remove, but it might be easier to completely remove the rear from the car. Its not that hard. And that way, you arent laying on the rear while trying to get the tank free.
    No F-Body right now

I have changed the fuel pump in my 94 Z28, and it was pretty easy to take out rearend. You have a lot more room to work with the whole thing out your way.

Well, that's a relief. I was worried about the possibility of a coil spring shooting out of place and hitting me or something.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate the quick responses.

I guess I'm going to get on ripping all of that stuff out as soon as the weather here gets above 30 degrees again.

Plus, I get to finally fix that broken gas gauge.
