  • Spark Plug Wires

If I remember correctly, the original factory wires had a metal heat shield down at the plug end - if anyone has an original Camaro correct me if I'm wrong; the garage that replaced mine a couple years ago discarded them and the wires now just have the big rubber boot. I'm wondering, is there a reason they used metal for the heat shield? From the pictures I've seen the aC-DElco replacements only have the rubber boot. Is that metal shield available? I looked in the Camaro parts catalog and there is listed.

See the photo in Figure 4 of this install page, that is what I think they looked like. http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...g_and_wire.htm

the heat shields help prevent hoat soaking. i really don't think it makes a difference considering the aftermarket parts do no have the shield.

Many discard them due to the fact that they are the cause of many misfires. Heat shields are a good idea, my soloution was to get Taylor Firesleeves. They are a braided fire resistant heat shield that is non conductive.

I second that. The heat shields caused mine to misfire too.

          Count me in too!

My heat shields caused a miss so bad that I could barely drive it. The dealership couldn't even diagnose it. Thanks to the F-Body Family, I diagnosed it, removed them and it runs perfect. The wires are fine and haven't burnt up and it's been almost a year.

So this could be the cause of my misfire?

If you have the metal shields on them they can definitely cause a misfire.

Ok....dumb question, I know, but why would GM put metal shields on plugs if they cause problems? I think they still do that on some of the new cars today.

Well, that's hard to answer . . . they also came up with the Opti-Spark......

While I have never driven a 93 - 98 F car, I've heard of the Opti spark and it seems that I hear nothing but bad things about it. I dont know that system well enough but it doesn't sound too reliable!

Actually, considering it is nothing more than a distributer they are pretty reliable. At least until the water pump leaks. They are designed for a 100K mile lifespan.

Yes- only GM engineering could place a distributor beneath a water pump- Maybe they intended that the results when the water pump began to fail would force you to do something about it-

They were designed that way, removing the distributor from the back top of the block to the front of the camshaft for the restrictions in space in the F-body- Resonable reliable, but a poor engineering decision-

Actually, the Corvette got the motor first. We get hand me downs.

Just about every company has their own design flaws. But one thing you can't argue about . . . GM gave us the fastest pony-cars off the showroom floor - and that was no accident my friends!
