  • New to 4th gen camaros, help!

Welp, I just sold my 88 RS ::wipes tear:: and bought a 1995 silver 4th gen with a 3.4l V6. It runs great, but two things are really bugging me, my oil pressure is VERY low- like at wide open throttle the oil pressure is pegged at a little under 40 and when it sits idle the pressure is very close to 0 (the oil has just been changed and is full, I made sure to check it) and when I'm sitting at a stop light, the car acts like its going to over heat- it heats up to 230* and then cools back down to around 200, is it my water pump, thermostat, or something else? PLease help guys, I know my way in and out of a 3rd gen, but the 4th gen camaro is a whole new piece of pie for me

Best thing to do is to check your oil pressure with a reliable guage. Thread it right into where the current sender is now. That does sound low to me too.

As far as the temp goes, your fans, unfortunately, dont kick on until around 220. Aside from reprogramming your PCM, your best bet is to put a nice toggle switch and relay in to control the fans yourself.

The oil pressure is fine now, put a little more mobil 1 in it and the pressure is fine, I also didnt realize that the oil pressure runs MUCH lower than the oil pressure on my 88 RS, got kinda freaked out but a shop manual helped me out, as for the overheating at idle, I'm looking into rigging a switch for the fans like you said

As long as the pump pickup is submerged in oil, adding more will not help increase the pressure. Engines really do not need much oil to run. The bulk of the oil in your engine is simply there to prolong its life and stay cool. The oil pan is simply a reservior. As long as there is enough in the bottom to cover the punp pickup, you are ok. Make sence?

Was the mobile 1 you added a thicker grade? that could raise the pressure.

When my car had a problem with low oil pressure the problem was actually the oil pres. sending unit. Try to find the specs for the engine and see what pressure operating limits are. The LT1 doesn't really require much oil pressure according to GM.

Yup... more oil in the pan WILL make pressure rise (indirectly) because the oil is staying cooler. Cooler oil is more viscous, so its conceivable that he notices a SLIGHT increase in pressure....

the mobile one is the same viscosity, its all good now, the thing that worried me was that the oil guage bottomed out a couple times while it was at an idle and the check guage light came on. Then. when i turned off the car there was a burning oil smell- the smell had nothing to with the oil. I found out after talking with the guy who detailed the car. They used a petrol based engine cleaner and the heat of the engine was burning it off. My shop manual says that the regular operating pressure @ 1150 rpms is 15 psi, so its all good
