  • Monsoon sound systems...

Since I'm new to this forum and don't have a signature set up yet... I have a 97 Trans Am WS6 and, for now, an audio system tech question.

Mine has the Monsoon audio CD system. Since this is different from the normal factory system, does anyone know how the individual speakers are set up? Do they have their own amps, or if I wanted to replace the speakers, should I be able to do that directly? The fronts are seperate woofers and tweeters (not sure of the size) and the rears look like standard 6x9"s.

A few years ago I had the mid-sail speakers at the rear seats replaced by a friend who owns a car audio installation shop because one blew, and he added an MTX Thunderform loaded sub, which they make specifically for fourth-gen Firebirds and Camaros (it fits perfectly into the left rear hatch area, out of the way, opposite the spare tire and jack which is on the right side).

Now that I'm about to replace the driver side power window motor and have the door panel off, and since my front tweeters have been crackling for a few months, I figure I'll just replace the front (and rear) speakers too.

    Any thoughts?

You can go ahead and replace them. The Doors are 6.5 inch speakers as well as the Rear sail speakers. Those are the Subs. The ones back in the hatch are not Oval. They are small like 4" speakers I believe.

No amps with the speakers, but they are odd impedances, and not all the same. The oval cutouts in the rear fender covers each house a small midrange and a small tweeter. Should add up to 10 speakers.... 2 in each door, one next to each rear seat, and 2 in each rear fender cover.

to be honest I wouldn't even waste my time with a qform box in the hatch area. JBL makes a decent 6 channel amp that you could put in place of the monsoon amp and get a head unit that has 3 sets of 5v preamp outputs...front, rear, and subs. Infinity makes good component speakers and MB Quart has a pair of 6.5" subs for the sail panels for about a c-note. This setup should sound stal clear with plenty of punchy bass. That is my plan eventually.

I have MB Quart 6 1/2" spearates in my rear quarters and while they do sound good they cannot keep up with the PPI 10" in the back rear hatch area.

The only way to feel the bass is to move air. For that you need a sub. Period.

+1 for sub box in the rear hatch
