  • LT-1 vs 4.6 Ford

Guys, Im thinking about trading in my 97 bone stock z28 for an 06 Mustang GT 4.6 v8 300hp with the 5 speed automatic. My Z has the 3:23 performance axel . Which on do you think will have the fastest 0-60 time and 1/4 mile time. Again both stock. My Z has 103000 on it and I need something to get by until the new Camaro's are out.

Thats a given. A stock Z28 with 100k vs A new 300HP car, GT's got it. My buddy has a brand new GT, I still pulled on him, ha ha. He was amazed that I was able to Hook up my car that well and continue to pull. They are nice, but if I were you, I'd invest in a stroker kit. Nothing to extreme and those GT's will be nothing at all. Stoker Kit or simply some Head work and Cam and you will be slapping those GT's left and right. Rust-angs are nothing without a blower, IMO.

Last time I drove a 4.6 stang I noticed that those motors don't wake up till at least 3K RPM....compared to an LT1 which pulls harder at low revs. Its a common thing when comparing push-rod vs OHC motors.

Ford's 4.6 are excellent motors. They sound awesome and pull well enough. Though, I'd keep your Z28. Nothing on the road is like it...lets keep your insurance rates a little lower and modify it. My friends 3.8, albiet highly modified, pulled on a 4.6 Mustang GT. Your potential in your Z28 is endless...besides, you have a great shell to build one hellva machine.

I figure, The GT's b4 this new model came out, they were 4.6's as well. I was able to Pull on stock GT's in my 1.5l SOHC honda. No Boost, No spray. Simply with a Cam and bolt ons. Since then, I lost respect for those things. lol. Then again those Cobra's are Beasts!! With some kit thats like $1400 you can be in the near 600hp range.

Based on all the road tests I've seen, the faster car will be the one to hook better. It could also be based on who has the stronger "factory" motor out of the box. I've seen the new GT A5s tested anywhere from 13.7 to 14.0. A '97 stock Z28 will probably run 13.8 to 14.2. The GT may be a bit quicker stock, but it's too close to call IMHO.

Very True. I believe you will be able to get the Maro to hook up a lot better than the GT.

Trading a car only to trade again when the new Camaro comes out is not a wise move. You would be better off doing a couple of modifications that will get you by until your first choice become available. That way, you'll have less overall funds spent when the smoke clears.

Financially, the best choice would be to keep the Camaro and save for the future Camaro. By the time it comes out, you could darn well pay cash for it. Whatever you do to your current Camaro in the mean time is up to you... modify it, leave it stock, whatever. But if you're looking at a new one in 2-3 years, it doesn't make much sense to buy a new car now if the old one is running.

The man has a valid point. Would you rather spend $20k+ on a new Mustang, or for under $2,500, change your entire exhaust system, converter + shift kit, CAI, mail order tune and gears, maybe a suspension piece or two, and drop .5 or more off your quarter mile time?
