  • Third gen tranny problems

i rescently put a 91 vette TPI in my 87 TA. Engine runs great, but i have the original 305 auto tranny in my car. I can't take her to 4500 rpm in first without bucking, and not even 4000 in second. I am looking to put in a manual transmission. Can a T5 support my 350? any suggestions for other trannys?

it can hold for a while but it will puke. if u can get a world class one it will do better but dont expect to hold up when speed shifting and what not. if u can, do the T56 swap, its one of the best upgrades. if u need more info, visit www.thirdgen.org

They range from 900-1500 for a complete swap kit. The kit should come with:

        -Transmission
        -Bellhousing
        -Clutch/Brake Pedals
        -Clutch Hydraulics
        -Shifter

In addition, you will need to get a new trans crossmember ($150ish)& a speedometer calibration box($80ish).

Make sure you the trans from an LT1 car. The LS1 T56's wont fit your engine.

any idea how long the job should be with two people?

also my setup is a 91 5.7 with a holley 4 on it, edlebrock performer, high flow cat, and flowmasters, i prob run in the high 14s right now. with the new tranny and possible 373s or 4.10s what should i expect as far as times?

tranny wont matter unless u get a 93 t-56 with the nice 3.2X frist gear ratio. the gears will help but ur 60' time might slip a bit with the manual. also ur gonna have to cut 2" more out of the shifter hole so u can get it into 1,3,5,R. www.thirdgen.org has a complete write up in the tranny board

thanks a lot, ill be lookin for that 93 , but with my current tranny problems my 0-60 could only improve with a 5 or 6 speed simply because my tranny bucks and shifts slow from 2nd to 3rd, although my quarter is respectable for an 87, my 0-60 is sub par at prob around 7.5. i honestly feel i could drop a full second with the headers, gear, and tranny off the 60.
I know that sounds nuts, but if you took the car for a spin you would prob agree.
