  • 1989 GTA ( Idle Problems)

I have a 1989 GTA. When I am driving, my car runs great. When I stop, the car will idle rough. It will rev up about 500 rpm's and then down. Sometimes it will even die on me. I went ahead and replaced the air mass sensor, but now the car will die on me when I try to put it in gear, or I idle for awhile. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks

Look for leaks in the vaccum lines also. Had a GTA that sputtered and died because of bad vacuum lines.

check for vacuum leaks and the IAC as mentioned. I would replace the two MAF relays. They are around 10 bucks each and are the same part # from the part store. One is the power relay and the other is the burnoff relay. If you need more instructions on replacing them, let me know.

          Idle problem issue

I have an 89 formula 350 (pretty much the same thing) which had the same problem. I.A.C. motor was out of specs. Don't try to clean it, just replace it. Also make sure that there are no vacuum leaks anywhere.
