  • I need HELP!

ok so here is the deal - iv been trying forever to figure out a way to fix my car. i recently pulled the motor and sent it to a shop to have it rebuilt but found out that the motor is shot, and cant be rebuilt. after hearing this i thought theres no way i can get enough money to fix my car and i would have to junk yard it. i was thinking about looking for a used car online for about $7,000. being only 18 i would need a loan to do this.... so here is the question.. could $7,000 loan get me a motor trans and new rear end for my car? and have it all installed at a shop somewhere? keep in mind that the car currently doesnt have a trans or motor in it so labor might be cheeper.

$7000 will get you a pretty good engine and Trans Combo. You can get a used engine and trans Combo for about $2500-$4000. And The $4000 would/should be installed. Just search online or at the local junk yards.

say i take it to a shop and ask them to order a new motor with a little kick and a new trans that can handle the extra power PLUS install. think i can afford that with 7,000?

Might want to mention the specific model, year, engine etc..... kind of hard to put a price on an engine/tranny/rear axle combo for a line of cars that was manufactured over a period of 36 years, using numerous combinations of blocks, trannies and rear axle assemblies. I can see in the tiny avatar that it appears to be a 3rd Gen.... V6 or V8, manual or auto trans, etc?????????

The thing is to get a loan when you don't have credit you have to have collateral. Something they can take from you to pay off the loan if you default. It's very unlikely they will give you $7000 for a motor. Now if you have established credit you could get a signature loan and get $7000 for anything you want. For $7000 you could get yourself a pretty nice 4th gen. You would also be establishing yourself credit by buying a car. After a few of these you will be able to get a signature loan. Give some thought to taking out a loan and buying a used car.

Have you looked into buying a remanufactured engine from your local parts store? You'd be surprised how inexpensive they can be. My buddy just bought a 350 chevy for his truck and after exchange, it was $1200. It even comes with a warranty.

Just for the hell of it, I called my buddy at O'Reilly's and had him price out a reman for an 87 T/A. He said the price ranges from $1175 to $1300 depending on what warranty you desire.
LS15 Power! Another LSx engine coming soon.

I'd say get a 4th gen. Im sure you can get one for about $5k (LT1 series). Thats your best bet. I mean the 3rd gets are nice, and I love them but its old. I'd Say keep the car for Future Project and get an auto loan so you can pick up a 4th gen. Im 21 and They offered me $12k so if I were you I'd look into getting a loan and searching online. Thats where I found my car. I had to drive about 1 hour and 20 minutes, but it was well worth it. There is a big difference from 3rd and 4th gens. And even bigger difference from the LTx to the LSx 4th gen.

                          LTx engine is for 4th Gen's 1993-1997
                          LSx engine is in 4th Gen's 1998-2002

The difference is Pretty Evident. LT1 f-body's are a little less Power productive yet much cheaper to fix up. With the LS1's they took care of more of the problems that came up with the LT1. They both sound different. Its alot of differences. And the appearence between the 2 are not to major but they are there.

Well i would like to thank everyone for there input on my situation but i talked to my mom and it doesnt look like theres a v8 in my the near future, let alone any kind of firebird, ta, or camaro

BUT i will try my best to hold onto the remains of my recently retired 3rd gen. cause parting with this car cant happen.. So i guess ill talk to everyone about my problems with it when i decide to take it out of storage and fix it up in 15 years.

Get more info on what happened to your current engine, and why the shop feels it can't be rebuilt. Unless there was a connecting rod sticking out of the side of the block, hard to believe it can't be rebuilt. Even if the block was damaged beyond repair, a junk yard block that can be rebuilt has to be very cheap. The SBC is about as common as you can get.

What's wrong with the trans? What's wrong with the rear? Why do you need to replace both of those?
