  • wet distributer?

i have a 95 camaro z28 with a lt1,this morning i accidently drove thru a big puddle of water/ during a big rain storm. it didnt stall, i made it to work, got off work and it wouldnt start, just made a really loud back fire. i think i got the distributer wet, can anybody tell me were the distributer is located, or maybe its a totally different problem.

because of the many different engine combinations though the years, it would be helpful to post a description of the year, make and model with as much information about engine options or modifications.

The distributer is called the optispark distributer, located on the front of the engine just behind and below the water pump. As you found out, they are prone to water contamination from either a leaking water pump or driving though large puddles. You can hope it drieds out in a few days, do not drive it with the misfire. You may have to replace the optispark, a simple cap and rotor is not the only thing that wears out. Once that problem is fixed, You can try to apply dielectric grease in the plug wire boots to help seal out moisture.

Shoebox has photos, diagrams, how to's, etc for the 95 LT1 on his website.... definitely the best LT1 reference on the 'net.

most likely an opti-spark issue. I had to replace mine on my '93 Z28 when I owned it. It shorted out going through a car wash with under body cleaner. I think the cost was around $450.00 for a new one. While you are in there, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change the water pump since it will be off anyway. Good luck.
