I used to run 10w-40 in the summer and 10w-30 in the winter but since I put in the 160 thermostat and set the fan temps to 185/195 I switched to 10w-30 for the summer and 5w-30 for the winter.

So should I always use 10w30 because I live in sunny CA,and winter is still warm

The best chart is in your Owner's Manual - not on some anonymous site on the Internet. Reread the Manual carefully, and follow it. 5W-30 is recommended for all climates. 10W-30 is acceptable if the ambient temperatures do not fall below 0degF.
Tell your dad to do a little more research. 5W-30 is exactly the same viscosity (thickness) as 10W-30 at 212*F (100*C). That's why they both have a "30" as the second number. The last number references the viscosity at high temperatures, the first number references the viscosity at low temperatures (cold start). "5W" will flow better and circulate through the engine better at 0*F. Most of the engine wear occurs in the first few minutes after cold start. After the engine warms up, 5W-30 and 10W-30 are the same.
"40" weight is not recommended, and a bit too heavy, unless you have some evidence that the particular oil you are using is on the low viscosity side of the range that defines 40-weight oils. Using an excessively heavy oil reduces circulation, and wastes energy.

Well i live up in Northern Cali by Sacramento..its been in the eighties last few weeks..
Just like Fred said, 10w-30 is fine. Like here in california its mostly always warm. The Past week its about 60-70 degree's at 7am so 10w-30 is all good. The lowest temp. we have had in about 10 years here in So. cal was in the 30's. That was Absolutely horrible. But that was worst case.
