  • 4L60E shifting problems in 3rd and 4th help needed

I have a 95 formula with the stock 4l60e automatic in it, the car has 127,xxx miles and runs great but my tranny is another story. Its has 1st gear strong but to shift into second you have to get the rpm's up to around 4000. The car does not shift up into 3rd or 4th gears no matter what you do. And if you stomp into it hard in 2nd it just revs. I checked the fluid and it seems to have a good color and does not smell burnt. I have heard this is a fairly common problem with this tranny and am hoping hat someone has some advice? Thanks

Does yours shift when you hit 2nd or takes 1-2 secs to shift?

You have to stomp into it to get the rpms up, and when you let off it shifts into 2nd

Agreed. I had an issue with the 2-3 shift at the strip, and asked Bryan at PCMforless if it was a PCM issue. He wrote this "...typically when the 1-2 shift works good and the 2-3 is really bad like that it is a sign your trans is headed south. The 3/4 clutch packs are the first thing to go in the 4L60E and the 2-3 shift flare is the indicator of it."

There are a lot of things that can cause this. One that most people overlook is a bad tps. When my tps went out, I had very similar problems to what you are describing. With 127k though, I would tend to say that your clutches are about fubar.
