Is Fram really bad? My dad went 450,000 miles in his Nissan Axxess using Fram filters with every oil change. Next time, I know. I got Royal Purple motor oil, NGK iridium plugs and Taylor wires. I reinstalled the stock shifter today and it feels 100 times better than that damn Pro 5.0. It felt like I was stirring cement with a spoon with that thing. The stock shifter is extremely smooth. It only took 45 minutes to reinstall too. Stock > Pro 5.0

Next comes a third gen center console. Before the summer ends, I also hope to get an aluminum driveshaft and a mail order tune. I'm hoping my fuel efficiency improves. I get about 20MPG combined as it stands right now. I figure with a tune up, clean air filter, reduced weight (A/C delete and dry cell battery) and aluminum driveshaft, I should pull 25MPG+ on the freeway. I'm very happy I didn't sell my car like I had planned to. I'm really starting to love my Trans Am.

There are a couple of online comparison tests (both many years olf at this point) that show major compromises in the design of the Fram filters, including low filter media area, being held together with string, cheap paper end caps that allow bypass, etc. I had nothing but problems with Fram on my Formula, and wouldn't even think about using one on any vehicle. One site had a letter from a Fram engineer who confirmed the compromises and defects in the name of low cost. The site was sued by Fram's parent company and forced to remove the letter.

First negative comment I've ever heard about the Pro5.0.... mine was the best shifter I ever put on the T56.

Quite a few people said the same thing as I did in this thread from ls1tech.com-
          http://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread...=456137&page=1

It had a solid feel to it and I definitely knew when it was in each gear, but I love the butter smooth feel my stock shifter gives me. It's a pleasure to drive it now. I can imagine why someone would love it, it's just not for me. Felt almost like I was forcing into each gear, as opposed to now where it feels like it wants to shift into the next gear. The 3-4 shift feels like I'm dragging a razor blade through tissue paper. It's so nice and easy.

After what you guys are saying, I'll never buy another Fram filter again. Now it's a decision on what to get instead. Thanks for the heads up everyone.

Tomorrow it gets: a fresh oil change with Royal Purple, NGK plugs with Taylor Thundervolt wires, and a new tie rod (apparently one is broken according to my mechanic). I think it's going to run like a dream. I can't wait. I think I need to get a tune sometime in the near future. Should I do the A/C delete before I have it tuned, or does it make any difference?

if i were you i'd check out the tie rod issue yourself. if one is broken, you wouldn't be able to even drive the car. i would also do the AC delete before the tune but it doesn't really matter. the ac delete won't change anything really other then rotational weight on the serpentine belt.

I'm not sure if he said bent or broken. I was on my way out of the door of the mechanic shop. They changed my differential and tranny fluid and I was hoping they'd change my plugs and wires too. I was supposed to bring it in to be serviced today and they told me as an "oh, by the way" type of thing. He didn't seem too concerned with it. After all, he let me leave the shop and drive off with it. Our company deals with them several times per day, so they take care of us. I don't think he'd intentionally let me leave with something terribly wrong.

yeah it must be bent then. even with it being bent, i probably wouldn't drive it unless it's a very slight amount. if it's bent it could be pulling your tire in or pushing it out, throwing your front end out of alignment.

Will a third gen center console be a direct fit? Or will I have to saw/ sand/ dremmel? Or will it simply not swap over? Third gens didn't have a 6 speed option, so I don't want to order the piece and be incabable of putting it in gear because it won't clear the plate

you'll have to make it work yourself, it won't be a direct fit. the console might go in pretty easy, but you'll have to make a 6 speed shift plate fit into the console. why are you wanting to swap to a 3rd gen console anyways?

I'm not a fan of 4th gen consoles. 3rd gen consoles feel a bit more sturdy, I like the power window switch positioning more, plus they're flat rather than sloped. Also, whoever designed the cupholder position on 4th gen consoles should have been fired. If I have a cup in there, I can either knock it over when I shift, or I can hold the shifter in an awkward position.

3rd gen consoles don't even have cupholders. i've always liked the 3rd gen console alot better myself. alot of the 3rd gen guys put 4th gen consoles in their cars.

One of the reasons I like them is due to the lack of a cupholder. IMO, there's no point in having something you'll never use.
