  • Eliminate EGR?

I have been looking into trying to get an LS6 intake manifold but I thought about it and the LS6 manifold does not have the Fitting right behind the TB. Is there a way to eliminate the EGR system from a 98-00 LS1?

Sure can. You would have to plug the hole in the exhaust from the removed EGR tube and cover or fill the port in the manifold. On LT-1 engines one can order block off plates, not sure if they have them for LS1 engines..... you'll have to search that. The only real issue is disconnecting the EGR will throw a code that must be programmed out of the computer.

Thanks Joe. Yeah I know you can remove it physically but the electrical Issue is what I was referring too. B/c If I get the LS6 Manifold I don't have to worry about Plugging the hole. I can Fabricate the EGR plates if need be but If I get a custom tune, can they program that out of the system so it wont set codes?

yes, just about anything that throws a code can be tuned out.

The engineers at GM who designed this EGR system should have been/be fired! It is a constant source of vacuum leaks simply because there is no provision for a second bolt to secure the flange and ensure a tight seal.

It's ridiculous! The flange has a hole in it for a second bolt, but there is no provision for a second bolt in the intake manifold.

I'm really surprised that the EPA has not mandated a recall of these cars to correct this obvious defect.

Other than replacing the manifold and reprogramming the computer, does anyone have any (practical) suggestions as to how to correct this problem?

I would say its a good Mod. With the Manifold and custom Program Im reckin a good 25-40 hp for under $500.

I hope you have someone that can sneak you past your emissions test then. Otherwise you'll fail the visual smog test.

Well, yeah, that's a good mod . . . except that I have neither the time, equipment or technical know-how to do it, not to mention that no shop will do it because it's a violation of federal law.

And if I ever want to sell the car . . . .

What companies sell the EGR block off plate for the LT1's?? Mine is shot and i'd rather not replace it.... I just unhooked it. It doesnt throw a code unless you know its under certain conditions on the highway so i guess its not bad to live with.
