  • New Dynaspark is in...and still no-start!!

Well, Craig and I got the new Dynaspark in, hooked up and what-not...but she still won't run!

No spark at the coil wire, no AC voltage at pin-B of the ICM harness but there is voltage fluctuation on pins A & B on the Opti harness like there should be. So, what gives? Is this one of the rare occasions that the ECM actually went bad on my Z? Or is there something else I should check first? How can I verify the harness is still good? Thanks in advance.

Steve, i would go over the harness with a fine toothed comb. I had similar problems at one point and traced it to faulty connections in the coil driver module circuit. In one case, pins in the module were slightly misaligned and made poor contact in the harness connection. Straightened everything out, put the connection back together and she fired right up. The reality was the driver module was not allowing the coil to build a charge so obviously there was no discharge when it was told to do so.

That's what I plan to do, but I have no idea which pins on the ECM go to which pins on the harness. So, as it stands right now, I'm going to "blind" test it and just try every stinkin' pin lol

So, I'm a moron. Did a continuity check on the wiring, everything checked out. This whole time I was testing the wires at the ICM, I was checking them in order of the diagram in my Helm manual (similar to the one on Shoebox's site), assuming that they were in the same order on the ICM harness. Everything checked out, so on a hunch Craig and I tried the ICM and coil out of his TA. Low and behold, she fired right up. Stupid, cheap parts...grrr lol. Thanks for all the help guys.

Glad you got it sorted out. Seems like the coil and driver module cause more problems than people realize.

            Agreed.

So, Craig and I got her buttoned-up and back on the road. Man, I missed the feeling of rowing 6 gears . So, here's what's been done:

            New Dynaspark Opti
            New Opti harness connector
            New Delco water pump
            New SLP 160 thermostat
Replaced heater/throttle-body hard-line split with brass piece (sits in front of the alternator) with a brass piece
            Cleaned air filters
            New MSD coil
"New" ICM (borrowing Craig's for now lol )
            New Goodyear Gatorback serpentine belt
            Fresh coolant (duh!)

The only thing that concerns me now is that the temp doesn't get above the second full hash (I believe its the 140* mark for the 93). Any ideas what this could be?

Yeah, I know the gauge is different, but I wasn't sure if that was where the needle is supposed to sit or not (thought 180 was dead center). Oh well, then I guess I won't worry about it
