  • 1994 Formula - 10 Speaker Audio - Questions...

O.K., 1994 Pontiac Formula, 10 speaker audio, bad CD player was just replaced. Had a short in the factory unit between two speaker connections.

I have no sound coming from the rear seat speakers, which if I am correct, are powered by an amp located in the rear passenger side of the vehicle. And these are only two 6.5" subs. Right? How is this amp powered? How does it get a "turn-on" signal? I have yet to dig around back there to test for power, or if the unit got fried when the head unit went bad. I have connected the power antenna leads in case that was used for remote turn-on.

I also seem to be completely lacking any bass... Assuming there are passive crossovers in the two door and two rear-deck speaker areas?

If I need to start replacing amps and crossovers, is it in my best interest to just junk the factory setup and start running all new wires and after market speakers, crossovers, and amps?

    Thanks!!

if your system is like mine and your not getting any bass then withs either the Subs that blew or the amps that power it. If your simply lacking Bass then dont even bother trying to replace/repair the stock amps. Get yourself an 8" or 10" in the back and you'll be good. The factory subs are total Trash and will blow very quickly. The even harder part is those subs run at 2 ohms which makes it nearly impossible to find aftermarket replacements.

I just ordered new component speakers for the front and rears, and two new amps. I'm going to leave the pillar speakers alone for the moment...

But it wasn't hard to find a 2 ohm sub... Just gotta know where to look. None would fit in the factory opening, though...

Please let us know how it goes, what you used and where you found it. I'm planning on doing this soon myself. My speakers are all shot to &*^%$. The fronts were replaced with chepo wal-mart garbage. Prolly better than what were in there but, whew, they sound BAD.

Well I know that. You can find 1ohm, 2ohm, 4ohm and 8ohm subs all over the place. Not the key is to find a 2 ohm 6.5" speaker/sub. Im pretty sure you wont find it.

P.s. I believe the speakers on the doors are running at 2 ohms as well so your going to have a good time finding speakers that fit and dont distort when you put up the volume half ways. Took me 3 months to find the right combination to make it sound great. All Factory wiring and amps.

If your going to run 2 amps I suggest to run a new head unit and scrap all the stock wiring. Its total garbage.

In the Doors I ran: Infinity Kappa 62.7i 6.5"
They run right around 2.5 ohms so sound real good

I followed that with a pair of: Pioneer TS-T110 poly dome tweeters
This gives a nice crisp sound for highs.

The subs are stock until I build the custom Sub box in the rear. Going with a 10" Kicker Comp VR in a sealed box.

The Rear cargo Speakers are Kenwood's.

All in all everything Cost me right under $200 (excluding the Kicker Comp)and sound Awesome for being completely Stock Sterio and Amps. Crystal clear mids and Highs. And of course Lack Bass.

The 6.5" speakers in the doors are at 2ohms.
The Tweeters in the Doors are 4 ohms.
The subs are 2ohms and the Mids and highs in the cargo area are at 4 ohms.

That right there is what makes it hard to simply swap out speakers in F-Bodies.

I've replaced the head unit and have 2ohm Infinity component speakers (4 subs, 4 tweeters) and two new amps on the way. Just peeling out the factory stuff. Going to forget the pillar speakers for the moment. 400 watts is a good start. It looks like I'll be able to fit the new Infinity's in the doors and the rear deck under the factory grills, just need to run some new wiring from the crossovers to the speakers. While it is not the greatest setup, I'm going to run the output of the new amps through the factory wiring to the crossovers. For now. Till I really get a bug up my butt about that.

After digging around for a while, I've completely given up on working with this crazy setup the stock audio has. It looks like with a little modification, I can get some 8 inch subs in the pillars, so hopefully I can add another 400 watts or so before I have to start giving up space elsewhere in the car.

Speakers arrive tomorrow...won't have time to install them until after the 4th. I'm in the fireworks business.
