  • Something weird happened.

Ok, today i was taking off out onto the highway and a car was coming so i take off a little harder than usual. I get up to 3k rpms, and then i let off the gas a tiny bit for some reason. then i go to push the pedal and all of a sudden there was like a clunk or something. and my rpms only went up to like 1700k. it was really strange. felt like it had to do with the trans. any knowledge on what this may be?

You might want to check your tranny mount...

Specifically, the rear mount where the trans rests on the crossmember. When they deteriorate, and they all do...... the trans is free to move around. Dump the clutch from 3000 rpm and you can watch the trans will rise off the crossmember and bang against the driveshaft tunnel. Replace it soon before anything else gets banged up.

Is it a simple task to put in a new mount? I'm pretty sure i could take it to the auto shop at at my old school. I could put my car on the lift and then basically i'd need to support the tranny, and then unbolt the crossmember and swap out the old and put in the new mount right?? shouldnt be too big of a hastle

Yea that's pretty much it. It's a 10 minute job once you get the car off the ground. And yea that clunk will scare the bajesus out of you.

make sure to replace it with an aftermarket polyurethane mount.

Well, don't tell anyone, but I drove mine for a little while with the mount broken and ummm yea I would occassionally get on it and nothing bad happend other than the $%#@# clunk. Honestly I figured it would be a three day repair just like everything else so I put it off, had I known it was so easy I'd have done it right away. On the other hand, your going to reno man, that's not enough?!?!

Having said that I'll add the usual disclamer......

Don't try this at home...these are professional drivers on a closed course.

just remembr when it clucks its moving up, so the motor is moving down(in theory) and there for u could break a engine mount or destroy the driveshaft. unlikely but it could happen. i broke my tranny moutn adn 3rd gear at a magazine deal at englishtwo nj and drove 150miles home

Finaly a question i can answer!!! i had the same problem to. the thump scared the crap outa me. considering i just fixed a few major problems i though oh god now what. i thought i was screwed.. later i lifted the car and saw the bolt missing from the trans mount .. anyway just lift the car, while its up put another jack on the back of the trany and lift the tranny as far as it will go up as this will raise the trans up away from the cross member. when i did it i didnt need to remove the cross mem.(the spare tire jack works great!) . That should give you enought room to replace the mount. if it doest then just take the cross member off too. VERY easy fix. Make sure you use a lock washer on that mount, i didnt use one and the bolt loosened and fell off. the trans will vibrate a lot so make sure its tight. Good Luck

Even though i didnt baby my car yesterday, raced a 2000 and something 'Vette convertible from like a 65 mph roll. hahaha yeaaa i'm bad. but i didnt hear the clunk when i floored it. Maybe it's more from a dead stop when it happens the most.
