I did this conversion and it was Faaaaaaaaaaaar cheaper ( considering the power you can make) to make the carbed big block.
If you want a fuel injected big block then you are probably looking at more money and I would agree with the posters above.
I was going to build a nice 396 and for roughly the same money I built a 510 BBC with Dart heads....and the kicker.....for the same money I was also able to buy a new transmission.
Not sure how radical you want to go, but I am making 650 plus at the wheels and paid what it would have cost for a 396. And it's hard to quantify the look on someone's face when they see that big block in there!
BTW, changing the plugs on a BBC in my 95 TA is no problem. Takes me 15 minutes to change all of them. I can put them in by hand on 7 out of 8 of the plugs. On one of them I need to use a swivel ratchet.

I put a BB 396 w/ 12.5:1 pistons(used the bigger chambered truck heads to pull the compression ratio down), Edelbrock Performer cam and intake, and MSD into my '83 TA.
I was lucky as I had this left over from a previous project when the 305 died. The problems I had were:
Rat = custom hood
Modified rear torque bar to fit S-T10 trans
Exhaust
No more A/C.
These make monster torqu in a very light body. I've spun near sideways coming out of a toll booth in 3rd on wet pavement, can hide the car in tire smoke on dry pavement, and cracked the windshield because I have T-tops for lack of frame connectors.
But it sure screams and looks good in the engine bay!
