  • LS1 Waterpump Issues?

Well I was at Taco bell getting something to eat with a buddy and As I was walkin to my car I realized there was a little puddle of Coolant under my car. It was not the res. over flowing. It was back. I popped the hood and looked to be hitting my sway bar so I know it was right from the front of the engine. My first thought is the Waterpump. My car has 60k on the clock. Seems a little to early to be having waterpump issues. Anyone have this issue. and How much am I lookin to spend on a new pump?

Remove your air baffles and take a look at the pump...check hoses for cuts or breaks and check your clamps.

My water pump went 120ishK before starting to leak...I could smell coolant faintly.

60K is early but not all cars are created the same...

I realize it's comparing apples to oranges in a way but the factory WP on my LT1 went out at about 40K (replaced under extended warranty by factory) and the 2nd went out at about 90K (replaced by me with lifetime warranty one from AZ).

It's VERY common for LS series engines to have leaking waterpump gaskets.

Well I got into it and sure enough It was the pump. Right where the shaft comes out and holds the pulley. Put some pressure in the system and Leak leak leak. $140 later and about 2 hours of work. Should have it done by 3pm today to go to work. Excuse the poor quality. (Camera PHone is all I had)

            curious on the pump manufactuer

so far i haven't had this issue with the water pump. but i'll be hitting you up if i do for pointers on easiest ways to get to it. i was looking at the pics and noticed the new vs. old.. the inner diameter of the inlet and outlet is noticablly smaller. did you have to change a hose? was wondering who made the new pump.. and understand i'm no expert but unless the impeller on the new pump is better.. i'd worry about flow rate. of course i know they dont make these cars anymore and aftermarket is all you get sometimes. would be curious if the radiator fans kick on more frequently (i'm in texas so hot is always an issue save 2wks a year) or any other issues. thanks- ron
