  • Lt1 Fan problem

    Hey guys,

To make a long story short, I had to replace my radiator in my 1996 Trans Am. When I finished, my SES light came on, which I discovered was because my coolant temp sensor was unplugged (which caused the car not to start at higher temps). I had to buy a new plug replacement and sensor because it had broken off. I soldered the new connector onto the wiring harness, and had no problems starting the car when it had warmed up, and the SES light had turned off.

Then I discovered, my car was STILL overheating. At idle, the temp slowly climbs up to the red line and then my coolant boils over (I have the cap off because I was trying to adjust the level because of the new radiator). I noticed that the fans are NOT turning on at all. I can't imagine it is something as simple as a fuse or wire because they were running fine before I had the whole problem and they were running with the SES light on. What could be the problem? The only thing I could think of is that the coolant temp sensor isnt working correctly, but the engine is running normally. Please help!

A scanner will tell you real quick what temp the PCM is seeing. You can test the sensor with a meter, but it is a lot more trouble.

Kind of irrelevant to the fan problem, but how are you suppose to get all of the air out of the system? I followed your refill procedure, but am not sure if you are suppose to just open the bleeder screws when the engine is off, or when it is actually running. Thanks for the help

Hmm... the guide tells when the engine is off or on.

Once the system is filled and up to temperature, you can just crack the bleeder screws to see if there is any air in the system.
