  • RPM's jumpin up and down?

Well i took my car to the track again, and the first run was fine. But on my 2nd run, the rpms would jump up and down from about 5k to 5800k when i was shifting. it really scared me and i stopped racing after that. This really sounds like a serious problem. does anyone know what it could be?

i'd agree.. tranny issue. and flucations of 800rpm during shifts.. am assuming enigne rpms ok otherwise. ... hmm. no expert.. and am much more familiar with 700r4's.. but would suspect a sticking valve in vavlebody/manifold, a busted accumulator, bad/weak spring, or seal. if its a stock tranny could be the cause on heavy use (racing etc) as its probably toasted doin that kinda thing. however.. if you worked it over/ fixed it up/ hot rodded via a shift kit or whatever.. umm. hate to say this but gotta as it relates. did all the check balls and spings..and all of the little rubber o-rings go back in per the shift kit instructions? just what i have done in the past. experiernce is great after the fact but winds up expensive in the process. there are a lot of parts there that really matter in an auto tranny. one little missed check ball .. the one that got away when the sping bounced it across the garage cost me a few weeks of headache. auto trannys are too intricate these days.. why i went back to a stick. but at the track.. umm autos way to go.

Yeah, well i have a broken tranny mount. Do you think that the broken mount could be causing this, or is it internally in the transmission?

i wouldnt think a mount would cause rpm jump. at least never had/heard of it. hard thumps, thuds, and other bangin on the undercarrage yes. someone else may have better info on that than me. would be an easier fix to change the mount than pulling and opening the tranny. but id get the tranny looked at anyway. may point to why mount broke , although im finding stock they are notoriuos for breaking. only other think i can think of that would cause an rpm jump at a shift is wheel spin. but guessing youd notice tires barkin breaking loose a bit or end swingin a little etc. the normal thing we probablly all know about.. now and then. ahh the fun. sorry got carried away. i know you know what it is.

Well this same problem happend again last night. I was racing my buddies Z28, and the first race was fine with no problems, everything was smooth. Then the second race was a different story. 1st to 2nd shift was fine, but the 2nd to 3rd shift was when the engine started revving. Its hard to describe, its basically like this: since mine is an auto, when the transmission shifts automatically, the rpms basically jump around from like 4.8k rpms all the way up to about 6k rpms. It feels like the it is in neutral. I've never seen anything like this and even my buddy doesnt know what is wrong. Some info would be great please! This has to be a serious problem!

If your rpms are fluctuating under load and the ignition or fuel isn't causing a cutout or drop,

The trans has an internal issue. It could be clutches slipping, it could be the converter locking and unlocking, could be electronic solenoids, but no matter what.... you have issues.

Yeah thats what i was afraid of. Well it drives fine under normal conditions, but when it does go out how much would i be looking at to replace the trans or rebuild?
