  • Tire Opinion

I had a leaking tire and went by Discount tire. It cannot be repaired (nail on shoulder) and they are going to replace the tire under road hazard. They also found a nail in a different tire that they were able to repair.

The problem is the tire I have has been discontinued and they will be replacing it with a new version with a different tread design.

My question is should I go ahead and replace the other one? It's gonna be $140 for the other tire. I have about 35K miles on this set of tires so far.

    Opinions?

i got mine at discount also. what do you have that they ran out of? and how long ago? am curious if ive got a future headache. never had an issue with discount over the past 10-15yrs. actually very happy vs goodyear dealer. either way.. if its not a matched set its iffy at best. at least from my past tire histories. at the very least match front axles and rear with the same. otherwise id be wiling to bet there will be noticable handling/ grip problems with mixed matched on same axle.

Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 which have apparently been discontinued.

They went on in Dec of '03.

I'll have to find out tomorrow what exactly they are replacing it with but the loaner is a Kumho Ecsta AST.

The handling with mixed tires is what I'm concerned with too.

mine are kumho ecsta stp z's. i went 4 all the way round after a flat like what youre talkin about. now it sticks like a train on rails. wet weather is excellent as long as you keep it sensable and dont get crazy with the right pedal. preivous set was mixed front and rear which was ok.. what it came with used.. fronts were goodyear gt's or something like that.. and gatorback in the rear. matching it up truely improved the handling vs when i bought the car. its a bit of coin invovled.. but make a choice. get by or go all out. ive done it both ways. all out is much better if you can do it. but sometimes its just an issue of gettin to work everyday if its your only car.. that would be me. if i remember right my last set put me back around 600 out the door. not too bad. not as expensive or inexpensive as available.. middle of the road.. and have been happy all the same.

i'd replace it if you can afford it. mise well since the other tire already has 35k miles on it. then you'll have 2 nice new tires that'll last you awhile.

They are going to replace it with Kumho Ecsta AST.

Gotta check some finances but I think I'm going to take the plunge and upgrade while I'm at it. They'll put 2 BF Goodrich KDW on there for 250 out the door...

Heard good things about those tires.
            Anyone have a different experience?

Maybe some confusion with the KD vs. KDW?
The W is supposed to be for improved wet traction???

Correct. The KDW is a very good wet tire.

I would definately replace the otherone with that kind of mileage. I am actually surprised you got that much out of them. I am in sales for a Goodyear store and have been for the last 14 years. This is experience talking. By the way, I have the KDWs' on the back of my formula and they are great. A very durable tire. Not sure on the rain traction. My car almost never sees rain. Good luck.

You are a salesman for Goodyear and you use BFGoodrich tires? That is a testament. interesting

umm. note my above comments on this. goodyear has fine tires.. just quite a bit overpriced for what you can get cheaper/better elsewhere. my issue was the support from the dealer in the past. but hey the guys gotta eat right? sell tires ..and go with whats best for his buck. dont fault him for the american way. lol. but take note of what he's shopping for. don't have to agree but there has to have been a little experience picked up along the way. thanks for being honest 89 formula. youre alright with me for that.

I didn't fault him. Why would even think that? Don't start something that doesn't exist.

Most people get a discount from where they work and still they are more expensive than the competition at retail. Personally I think Goodyear's are overpriced and behind in technology compared to Bridgestone/Firestone.

Even though I work for Goodyear I can also order any tire imaginable. My car having p245/50r16 on it does not have the best pick of the crop as far as tire sizes go for quality. I will give testimate to an awesome Goodyear tire! A buddy of mine has a 97 T/A and runs p275/40r17 Goodyear eagle F1 GS-D3 on it. He bought them from me ($1,000.00) and he claims the best performing tire PERIOD. I actually had his car up to 148 mph and it was like riding on glass. Awesome performance for the money. Any question on tires let me know. I check this sight often. Laters.
