Hey guys,
Me and my friend started to take apart the Lt1 in my 1996 Trans Am because of an overheating issue that was narrowed down to an internal problem. I'm sure some of you know about my problem, but for those of you that don't, the Pontiac dealer that I took it to said they found considerable amounts of hydrocarbons in the coolant (blown head gasket, cracked block/head?). We got the intake manifold off, and are in the middle of unbolting the exhaust manifolds so we can pull the heads. We decided to do it this way because the Y pipe bolts looked nearly impossible to get to, not to mention extremely rusty. Anyways, we got the drivers side manifold unbolted (finally) but are having trouble figuring out how to get the 5th bolt (counting front to back) off of the passengers side exhaust manifold. We finally figured out a good way to get a ratchet in there, but just can't seem to get it on the bolt head. Any suggestions? We tried a couple different wrenches, sockets, and extension combinations, but we just can't seem to get it on the bolt.
After struggling for quite a while, we started to debate possibly dropping the engine out of the car. We only have a couple fairly large jack stands, but apparently it is possible without a lift. Obviously we're trying to do everything we can to not pull the engine, but if the progress continues as it is now, it seems like that pulling the engine is almost less work. Would this be worth doing, and if so, how big of a job is it?
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
