I've had my camaro for about a month now and ever since I've had it, the security light is illuminated while the car is on and the engine is running. I'm having no trouble starting it at all, its just that orange light is starting to bug me, how do I get rid of it?

    Security Light Problem

    Hello Stryker20:

I have a 95 camaro 3.4 also. About 4 or 5 months ago mine started doing the same thing.I took it to the dealership and they said it may just be the chip in the key and to try the extra key and if it still did it then i'd have to bring it in to them,($$$$$). The extra key did the same thing then after some time it started to take spells of getting in turning the switch to start it and not starting,i'd have power just would not attempt to turnover until you left it alone for 3-5 minutes to allow the ECM to reset. then about a month ago it really started getting bad sometimes taking 2 or 3 times before it would finally start. I was to the point a few times of almost calling a damn wrecker to come & get me cause it still wouldn't start after 3 or 4 times, but luckily it would eventually start. After many many questions and alot of research it got narrowed down to either a bad ECM or a bad ignition lock cylinder,(not to be confused with the ignition switch). dealers and most stores wanted $55-$60 for a new lock cylinder then another $25 for a key for it that matches your current VATS. So I went to Advance Auto Parts and bought a cheap one that they had for like $30. The tools I had to get was a GOOD steering wheel puller and a GOOD lock-plate remover both from Autozone, believe me what they have are alot stronger and easier than what Advance has !!. So for both of the pullers it cost me about $25 but I kept both very clean and had no problem returning them for a refund after I used them, there were no questions asked !!. Then luckily I happen to do a roof job for a guy the same week I did this repair,he was a locksmith !!!..He matched the VATS for me and made me 2 keys for $30 for both. I have had no problem now at all. It starts immediately and the security light has not come on one time since then !!!!.

    So here is a recap:
Ignition lock cylinder w/VATS wire from Advane Auto- $30
    Steering wheel puller from Autozone..........................$15
    Lock Plate remover from Autozone.............................$15
Two new keys made with the chip..............................$30
Chiltons repair manual from local library.....................$0
About 1-2 hours of patience !!!..........................Priceless

After return of pullers, a repair cost of about $60 compared to who knows what if it was taken to a dealer for repair !

***Note: The reason for the book was just to be sure on the removal of Air Bag. And check prices of a few different locksmiths first before a dealer. This is something you may wanna do as soon as possible because mine started out the same way !

WOW WHAT A LIST OF THINGS TO DO...

      drake...

Isn't it probably just something wrong in the computer, that is telling the car to leave the security light on...

My Celica that I had, had its airbag light on for no aparent reason when I first got it and I took it to the Toyota place and they said it was just a faulty signal from the sensor...

      Well... I was just wondering...

      Later...
      Mara...
      Thanks

        light

        yeah Mara;

In my case the bad switch wasn't sending the right signal to the ecm making it think someone was trying a wrong key and stealing it. it wasn't recieving the correct resistance that is in the key.

well, i havent had starting problems, but I think read somewhere that if your car has the factory keyless entry and you use the remote to lock the car but the key to unlock the car, it triggers the security light, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I remember reading. I checked my rpo codes and sure enough the code for keyless entry was there, but the original owner lost the remote, so if I got a new one would it solve this? Or would I still have to get a new locking cylinder?

            light

mmmm..not sure about that stryker. I have the factory security alarm and keyless entry but that didn't have anything to do with my problem. but just remember that the first time it doesn't start and you have to wait about 5 minutes for the light to go out, then you will probably have the problem that i had. by the way, the locksmith that made my keys said that he knew of a few other people that had the same problem with the bad ignition lock cylinder..best of luck !
