  • 3rd and 4th gen interchangeable parts??

I've got a 92 RS. I'm in need of a front spindle and also am looking for a posi unit or a whole rear end with posi. Just wondering if most of or any of these chassis/suspension parts are interchangeable between 3rd and 4th gens?? Although the rear end i need to keep 3rd gen because i'm using 3rd gen rims and if my research is correct, the 3rd and 4th gen rear ends are different widths. so, any of you f-body experts with some info, fire away. Any info is appreciated!

The rear axle assembly and the rear suspension of the 3rd and 4th Gens are virtually identical, except that the 3rd Gen 10-bolt rear axle assembly is 3" narrower than the 4th Gen 10-bolt assembly, as you have already noted. The carrier/posi/gears are fully interchangeable. Some 3rd Gens have a fairly rare 9-bolt Borg-Warner 9-bolt rear, made in Australia, so make sure you don't have one of those before you try and swap the posi/carrier/gears. You can identify the rear simply by counting the bolts on the cover plate.

The front suspension is a different story. The 3rd Gen uses a true McPherson strut suspension, with a coil spring separate from the strut, the 4th Gen uses an unequal length upper/lower A-arm configuration, with a coil-over shock/spring assembly. It would be pure chance if any pieces were in any way interchangeable.

i agree with fred but u can use a 4th gen rear in a 3rd gen, just the wheels will stick out 1-1.5" depending on the wheel but u wouldnt have to buy spacers if u went with a 4th gen off-set. try to get a 3.42 gear set outta a v8 car

The only way to make the wheels fit under a 3rd Gen chassis with a 4th Gen rear would be to buy the correct, larger positive offset wheels. You can't add spacers.... that would make the wheels stick out even farther.

fred i was refering to the fact that if he had bought a aftermarket set of wheels with the 4th gen off-set he wouldnt have to buy spacers for the rear
