I'm lookin for a posi to put into my 92. anyone know how many splines our axles are?? are the 4th gen posi units a direct drop in?? and 3.23, 3.42, or 3.73.... in your opinion what gear set should i choose? I'm running a primarily stock motor so i shouldn't put too much gear in it but also enough for an engine swap in a year or two.

You can't swap the complete rear axle assembly unless you get larger offset/backspace rear wheels. The 4th Gen 10-bolt rear, while otherwise identical to the 3rd Gen 10-bolt, is 3" wider.

There were also a few 3rd Gens with a 9-bolt Borg-Warner rear, made in Australia. The parts are not interchangable between the 9-bolt and the 10-bolt. You have to make sure you don't have a 9-bolt, although I think they were only used in the high HP 350 applications.

If you buy a used posi carrier, you will need a new set of gears or at least the pinion gear that goes with the ring gear on the carrier, because the ring and pinion (whatever ratio you choose) will have to be a matched set. Hence, you will need a 10-bolt (7.5/7.625") carrier, either 2-series or 3-series, the ring and pinion set for the gear ratio you want (which must match the carrier "series"), and a rebuild/install kit for the installation.
