  • New Pioneer DEH-P77DH and Polk db651

Finally finished. I decided not to use the stock tweeters in the door. They are wired in parallel to the midrange/woofer, so hooking them up along with the new Polk db651 will lower the load to 2 ohms. I didn't think this was wise in the long run as the Pioneer is rated at 4 ohms, with a small note saying it is not advisable to run 2 ohm speakers.

Anyway, being coaxial speakers, the loss of the stock tweeters is not noticeable.

Here's a couple quick shots of the new H/U:

And here's a shot showing just how much room is available in the front speaker pods:

Overall, this is a project I should have done a long time ago. The driver's side speaker surround was completely dried out and torn. The passenger's side was intact, but just barely.

Next on the list: do away with the stock subs, install the Polk db651 in there place. Then, disconnect the rear speakers, and use the wiring harness to power the Polks in the sub's old home. Finally, I'm probably going to get a Subthump single box to restore the bumpity bump.

    Fun...

Thanks...not a whole lot to choose from in the 1.5 DIN size. I looked at the AVIC models, but don't want to have to deal with a filler panel.

Even though it's old technology, I was suprised to see Pioneer manufactured this Oct. 2007. Also, it has provisions for XM/SIRIUS radio, cd changers, and Ipod hookups. I wasn't expecting all of that.

Something I'm not using is the built in car alarm feature. If you hook this thing up to door and motion sensors, it'll activate sirens and produce sound through your speakers. Pretty advanced stuff...

Tweeters typically don't "show" an ohm load due to the capacitors that come with them to prevent low frequencies from reaching them. I've seen cars with 8 tweeters hooked up to the radio along with a pair of midrange with no issues. You can go ahead and hook the tweeters up with no problems.

I have 2 of those radios, one in my bird and one in my Astro. I would highly recommend getting a separate amp for the mids because the radio just cannot drive the speakers as cleanly as an amp can. That radio has a lot of nice functions and is still compatible with the newer XM add-ons and CD changers because Pioneer has not changed their data cable. My bird has a 50 disc changer in it (which they quit making in about 1998) and my Astro has an XM radio from 2004 in it.

BTW, the Avic series is not a direct bolt in like the 77 and 47 are. The Avic is double din and takes some major modification to fit in a 4th gen. I'm not willing to hack my dash up just for a radio.

I guess the question is do they make the D3 in a 1.5DIN? Everything I have seen is a double-DIN.

              Al:

Looks good. Colors match, does not look "out of place" like many aftermarket receivers.
