  • ? bad carbon canister

can a faulty vapor canister cause your car to stall intermittently?

I believe I have a bad cannister. No stalling at this point, just an engine light on.

When does your car stall? What year, and what engine?

If the canister is saturated with excess fuel, its possible you are hitting the engine with a rich mixture when the EVAP purge system operates. Generally, the system only works when the engine is under load. Stalling can be caused by a faulty EGR valve, or a faulty IAC motor, but without knowing anything at all about your car there's not really any way to get more specific.

Not so much the canister, but the purge system could hang open, giving you, in effect, a vacuum leak- should throw a code if that is happening-

Only sets a code for flow during non-purge if its OBD-II..... and we don't have any idea what year car he is asking about.

Its a shame the "signature" is so difficult to set up on this site. It would make answering questions a lot easier if people would just access it using the "Quick Links" button, and set up a signature.

Sorry, this has been a problem for me now since November. I have taken it into two dealerships and they don't know whats wrong. I have a 94 camaro with headers and borla catback. As far as emissions go, EGR, AIR delete programmed into the computer, running no catalytic converter. I had replaced the coil a few times thought that was the problem but no such luck. Seems like when it sits for long periods of time it runs fine for a while, but the more frequent I drive it the worse it gets. It will stall after like a twenty minute drive, just quit. Then after I let it sit for about 30 min. it will drive for about 5 more min. The computer isn't picking up any codes whatsoever. This is really frustrating because it's not like it's a major problem with the motor probably just some stupid sensor.
