  • Brake test

I had new pads and rotors put on my car. I drove to an clear area and slammed on the brakes at 50 mph. It left 4 streaks of rubber and the smell of burning rubber in the air. I thought that ABS would prevent this from happening. Are my brakes, broke?

Is your ABS light on? That would indicate a problem with the system.

Does your ABS light come on before you start the engine for several seconds?

Maybe the ABS bulb is burnt out in your gauge cluster?

theory: Maybe, if you are stopping all 4 wheels simultaneously, the ABS cannot detect a speed difference between wheels, and doesn't limit braking force to any one wheel that is slowing down out of proportion to the rest-

ABS lamp not lighting during ignition on or engine start. So I assume it isn't working at all. Thanks.

I can tell you one goofy way to test the ABS system to see if it is active. Put the rear end up on jack stands. Start the car, put it in gear and get it up to 25 mph for a minute. The computer will see the front wheels are stopped and it will light the ABS light. Every time I had to get my emission checked on the 95 they put it on a load machine and it would light the ABS light. When we got through I had to turn off the car and restart it to reset the ABS system.

Do they sell EBCM scanners for home mechanics?

If that was the case, ABS basically would be useless, exactly when you needed it. The system also considers the rate at which the wheels are decellerating, when individual wheel speed is approaching zero, etc.

Well I took my car to what passes as a "goodwrench" shop here. I also brought Volume 1 of the service manual. They did "tests" and scanned it. I was told the the rear speed sensor needs to be replaced. I will have to order this from the states (GM 10456115). The light still won't light. I wonder if the bulb is out. I will have to take a look. Anybody know what bulb it takes?

I just looked up the code for rear speed sensor C0050 which should also set the brake warning light, which works and is not on. The sensor resistance indicates almost a short condition.
