  • TOWING HOME MY GEN3

I need to tow an '86 IROC from North Louisiana to Tulsa with my Suburban using a basic a-frame adjustable towbar, but I'm not sure if it can be done and don't want to get there to find out that it can't. What I'm mainly concerned about are the modifications/fabrications that I'll have to do to connect the towbar to the frame. Will I have to take off ground effects/other front parts, fabricate brackets, drill holes in the frame/front of the car, that sort of thing.

    Thanks in advance,
    Stace

why not just rent a tow dolly and put the rear wheels up on it, strap it down and go?

Watch out if the rear end is a posi or spooled. I had to have my bird towed once and it had to be picked up from the rear so it wouldn't bind and jump around corners.

If i'm wrong about this let me know please, I was told to do this and if I was misinformed I would like to be corrected.
SOLD: 91 Firebird, 350 .030 over, flat top pistons, done up 305 (14022801) heads, performer rpm airgap intake, 292/292 .501/.501 cam, holley 4150 (800cfm) carb, Th400 trans, Gm 10 bolt posi rear end. Currently running 14.6 at 93 mph. Now driving a 04 Mitsu Lancer, slower but at 1.87 per gallon for gas; much cheaper to run

I have my own tow dolly and use it all fo the time for my old cars but I have not tried my 96 trans am on it. I think you will have no problems using a tow dolly but if you are driving across country you should disconnect the drive shaft and put a plug in the rear of the trans. (an old yolk would work fine.) Or you could back it onto the tow dolly lock your steering column (even tie the steering wheel to the seat frame to keep it straight) and coem back that way.

you can also rent a full trailer which is the best way to go. You should contact Uhaul in the town your going to and see what they charge for a one way trip. sometimes it is much cheaper to go from a military base town or more popular town to another town ie sacramento to Oklahoma woudl be cheaper then Oklahoma to sacremento because more people are moving to that town or state then here.

Also, weigh your options, if it takes 250.00 to rent the trailer check into buying your own and having it for future trips most are being sold for about 800.00 new. a used one is about 550 to 600. If the car is driveable just take a bus or fly out there and drive back. what could be more satisfying then taking yoru new car on a 1500 mile trip straight out of the box? I have people I know buy 60's model cars and have done this with little problems. Just have the former owner give it a good once over and have him replace the items needed for a safe trip. Pay him back when you get there an get your butt home.

Whatever option you decide, I personally wish you a safe trip. enjoy yourself and of course tell us about your road trip when you get back.
