  • Possible transmission problem

Need opinions as to what might be wrong with my car, por favor...

Last Monday I was driving home from work on the interstate, doing about 70-75, and I noticed the engine was roaring real loud, almost like it wasn't in the right gear. It was at 3000 rpm, and usually it's right around 2000 rpm at that speed. I let up off the gas and went down to about 60 for a minute, and it got a little quieter, but as I got back up to 70 it revved back up to 3000 rpm. It did fine at lower speeds and I didn't notice any problems when it shifted, it was just the unusually high rpms and the roaring that got me a little concerned.

The rest of the week it did fine, I had no problems with it shifting or high rpms. Then it happened again this morning when I had to punch it to merge into traffic (because an old lady was riding in the right lane and wouldn't get over even though there was no one in the left lane, and there was a guy riding my back bumper). Loud roaring, rpms at 3000 at 70 mph.

Any idea what sort of problem I could be facing? It's 2001 (Camaro which you can probably tell by my sig), automatic, 3.8 V6, just turned 78,000 miles. No visible fluid leaks, no "check engine" lights coming on.
