  • Help with Cam Selection...

    Hey everyone,
Im looking for a cam for my 96 LT1 Powered 3rd gen. Mods are below. I was orginally going to go with the GMPP Hotcam Kit, but I have decided to buy the parts individualy. Im going with a Comp Cams Cam, Beehive Springs, and 1.6 Roller Rockers.

CAM - Comp Cams has several cams that work with the LT1 & I honestly dont know what some of the specs mean. Can anyone shine some light for me.

ROCKERS - From what I have read, I should upgrade to 7/16 studs. Are the Crane gold rockers worth the extra $$$ over the GMPP ones?

This may spark a controversy but I have a different theory about creating horsepower. I don't believe slapping a cam in a car is the best thing to do. I think increasing head flow with a small cam is a better way to go for the street. MTI racing built a C5 for a guy, yes they bored it and stroked it to 427cid and put some really good heads on it. They put a very mild cam in it so much so you couldn't really tell it had a cam. It dyned at 502 rwh. He said it was very drivable and got 25mpg on the highway. My experience with putting a cam in a motor with stock heads has yielded marginal horsepower gains while totally killing the gas mileage. The example I use is the new Corvettes. They put really good flowing heads with mild cams that meet emissions and still get pretty good fuel mileage while making some phenomenal horsepower numbers.
