  • transmission noise

I have a 1987 TA with a 700R4 transmission it shift great but it develop a rubbing noise only in drive and increases with speed. No change when I pull the TV cable. I change the fulid and tried 2 bottles of lucus honey teatment and no change. I have taking the rear tail of the trans off and by turning by hand it make a sqeaking nosie. So I confirm it no the driveshaft or rear end. I'm thinking it a be a internal bearing or bushing. Any help, ideas or suggests would be greatly appreciated. Don't what to take trans out of car.

    Thank's

Doesnt sound like a typical tranny noise. Does it increase with speed or RPM??? I would look elsewhere before the trans.

      transmission noise

I haved the car for two years and it just started making the noise. It doesn't may the noise in park or reverse. the sound only increase with speed not RPM's.

Get up to speed and listen to the noise. Pop it in neutral.
Still hear the noise? If it stops making the noise, it cannot be the driveshaft or rearend.

If it doesn't stop making the noise, this proves nothing, it could be anything yet.

I highly doubt the tranny then. If it turns out it is, let me know, because this will be a new tranny noise for me. If the noise is influenced by speed, its probably rotational: ie. driveline, rearend, axle bearings, wheel bearings, tires etc. If you put the car in neutral while driving, you take the torque off of the drivetrain and alot of times this can eliminate the driveline and rear end (but not always), and pass the blame to tires or wheel bearings etc

              Exactly.

The driveshaft and rearend ARE still spinning. SO, if the noise stops in neutral, it cannot be the driveshaft or rear.

If it were either of the two, the noise would continue in any gear.

              Make sense?

yes and no but it doesn't matter because Ace said "I have taking the rear tail of the trans off and by turning by hand it make a sqeaking nosie. So I confirm it no the driveshaft or rear end."

I have never heard of this problem before so all I could do is guess and I am going to try and stop doing that.

I must have missed this in the original post. (I'll try reading the post next time). I stand corrected. If it makes the noise without the driveshaft attached, then it must be tranny. I dont know what though. Its got to be something on the output side if its not rpm related. Got me!

Ace, where are you from? If your near central NY, I may be able to help you.

                    transmission

I check the pressure reading and they are as follow
                    park 45lbs.
                    R 90lbs
                    N 45lbs
                    OD 45lbs.
                    D 45lbs.
                    2 160-170lbs vibrating
                    1 160-170lbs vibrating

park just pull TV cable 155 release drop to 75 and back to 155lbs.

When you check in OD or D, is this sitting still or is this the highest pressure you get while driving it??

                        transmision trouble

With the car on jackstands and the back wheels in the air at idle and also tapping the gas pedal.

Those pressures look pretty normal at an idle. They should go up as it shifts. What do you mean vibrating??

If your sure its in the tranny, your best off taking it to a GOOD tranny shop. Internal tranny is not something to mess around with in your backyard. (Although I had a hand in rebuilding one in a driveway before )

                          Where are you located??

Sorry, my father is a tranny guru, but he owns a shop in central new york. That would be kind of a long drive with the tranny making noise Without hearing the noise its very difficult. Trannies are fairly intricate, thats why I reccommend you take it to a GOOD tranny shop. Let me kow what comes of it.
