  • "Hey! Cut the 'chatter'!"

Today i had my clutch and flywheel installed and there is quite an amount of chatter that occurs in first with a light load at low rpm.

    http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku

    http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku

    My questions are:

Could this cause damage to anything? If so, to what?
Is this normal for either or both of these types of parts?
Is there any chance that the chatter will decrease over the break-in-period?
Could it be cause of a defective part?

    Thnks for the help folks

I should specify that the chatter only occurs upon engagement.

My SPEC S3 did the same thing, however, it was a puck disc clutch.

You might want to let it break in and it might go away. If its still there after so many miles, you might want to start tearing back into it.

My opinion is I think it is because the flywheel is Blanchard ground rather than turned. The T56 transmission doesn't seem to like this at all. Notice the pattern on the surface of the flywheel. It has cut patterns that overlap each other. That is because it is made by a using a small diameter cup grinding wheel where they bring the wheel down to touch the surface then spin the flywheel. Compare that to the Centerforce http://store.summitracing.com/partde...7&autoview=sku where the flywheel is put on a lathe and spun using a small single point cutter and it slowly moves from the outside to the center like an old 33 album record. I had a stock flywheel resurfaced using a Blanchard grinder, used a SPEC stage 2 clutch and it vibrated so bad I thought my teeth were going to come out. I bought the center force flywheel and a SLP organic clutch (which yours is) and the chatter went away. Since you already have an organic clutch I fully blame the flywheel. I think the only way you can fix that flywheel is to take it out and take the "replaceable friction surface" out and find someone to resurface it the way a 33 album is. BTW the stock flywheel looks like a 33 album. (FYI the SPEC clutch I had had a .010 taper accross the surface causing it to only contact on one side. I am not 100% sure if it was causing the problem or the flywheel or both but I sent it back. I have read online where resurfacing a flywheel with a Blanchard grinder has cause many people problems with the T56)

If you still have a stock flywheel you could put it in and see if the problem goes away. I know it's a lot of work but you get pretty good at it doing it over and over. I think I had mine out 3 times within a month.

If I had known you were looking at that flywheel before you bought it I would have told you not to get it. If you posted it I apologize for not seeing it. I admit I have been too busy lately to read everything on the board. Bad me.

Gotta say, after looking at both of those, I wouldn't trust that first one any further than I could throw it. Give me a solid piece of machined steel over a multi-piece ground steel any day.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do now?
could it also be cause of the kevlar dual friction clutch?
I was thinking maybe exchange the first one with a smoother one, ask for a labor refund (yeah right) and just forget that ever happened.....

I have driven nothing but manual transmissions all of my driving life.

                From my experiences:

The primary problem with chatter in a new clutch job is that the mechanics failed to follow the torque specs for the flywheel.

If the flywheel is not centered and true, even with a new clutch plate, the chatter will continue.

Interesting.... i have heard of that issue before.

What should i do now though? Are the clutch and flywheel being damaged as i drive the car? Thank you for the time.

Also, i noticed an odd sound when i start the engine (neutral and clutch in). It is a similar sound to when someone runs a zipper up really quick...

Mine did that too with the new flywheel. i don't think it is anything to worry about.

After driving the car with the new clutch and fly for 100 miles (mas o menos ) the chattering and vibration upon takeoff has diminished ~~75%

                          The end!

There will be some "wear in" chatter that will stop after awhile. But you can probably bet the torque specs on the flywheel were ignored. Hope your clutch runs smoothly from now on.
