Why would you want to get a rear-end with drum brakes?

The rears with the drum brakes are from the V6, and typically do not have a posi differential.

So how much work would it take to switch over to the disc rear. cause i have the old rear housing i just need everything else cause i wire brushed it and everything and painted and got it real clean. but just curious what all i would have to do to change it

go to a junkyard, i got mine with 39K on it for 125$ that was for a third gen 3.42 drum rear tho. i beleive all u need to make the disc brake one work is the cables, make sure to get the LS1 style rear tho. much better set-up

well i mean i have the 94 z rear with all the brackets and everything but hte center carrier. we pulled it and now the thing is gone. so what would everyone suggest from here? just buy a new center carrier and all the guts or just junk it and go find a LS1 rear

LS1 rears are gonna be a few bucks more then a LT1 rear. try www.thirdgen.org, its a popular swap onto us third genners cars so u prob have more luck finding a rear there for a decent price

In terms of strength, the LS1 rear axle assembly is no different that the LT1. Mechanically, they are the same unit. I believe the posi unit is a bit different in the later ones, but they are no better than an LT1 rear.

When you say the "center section" is missing, what is gone.... the carrier and the ring gear? You will have to buy a new carrier, new ring and pinion, an intall kit, etc. Add the gear install, and you are probably looking at about $1,000. You would be better off finding an intact assembly from V8, preferably an M6, if you want the 3.42's. If you are saying the one you have has 3.42's, it doesn't appear to have a complete set of gears. Sounds basically useless.
