  • LT1 Throttle bodies....

    Hey everyone,
Looking to get a throttle body for my 96 LT1. The holley looks nice buts its too pricey for me. As far as all the other manufacturers... is any one better than another or are they all the same?

    Thanks,

I don't think you will see much in the way of HP with a larger TB. You are limited to 52mm, unless you open up the ports in the intake manifold. And at this point a 58mm would be a huge waste of money. Most of the TB's come with minor problems... the Holley typically has a problem with the blades not closing all the way, the BBK has a whistle from the idle air passage being blocked by casting flash. The LPE/Accel and the AS&M are typically better, but a lot more expensive. There is a lower cost TB available, made in China. Unfortunatley, another case of the Chinese ripping off one of the US designs and selling it for 60% of the cost. I personally avoid these ripoffs on principle.

You can also have your stock TB bored out and new blades installed for fairly low $$$. I suspect you can find this service on e-Bay.

AS&M has a single blade throttle body, basically just taking out the pillar dividing the two signle blades, how would this effect things? Could it be worse since the air is not directed to either bank? They are bit more expensive too, but offer a 54mm version as well that doesn't mention anything about porting, but again as the other guys have said, it won't yield any significant performance gains.

Thanks guys... i think I am going to stick with the stock TB and have the intake manifold ported instead. I will have them bore the TB opening to 58mm so if I decide to get more extreme with the engine later, I will be ready for the bigger TB.
