it's awhole lot less trouble to go to the dealership, provide proof of ownership of the vehicle and furnish the VIN. They can get you a new key cut based on the info from the manufacturer.

That way, you don't have to pull everything apart.

i wish it was that easy...i've already tried that

evidently the ignition has been changed before because the key they gave me didn't work...i even had them do it twice...still no dice!!

the key goes in but the ignition doesn't turn.

Wow, that sucks. They will need to somehow find out what resistance your old key was. I don't know how they will do this, unless they can read it directly from your VATS.

To replace the key lock cylinder, you will need to remove the battery cable (and wait a few minutes), then pull the airbag. Pull the steering wheel, then the steering lock plate. You will need special tools for each of these, obviously. I forgot how far down the key lock cylinder is, but once you remove enough parts, it's held down by an allen screw. Remove it and pull the lock cylinder out. Be warned that the VATS wires are connected to the key lock cylinder, so yanking it out might cut the wires in a bad way.

I suggest you have a Helm manual, if you don't already. Using that and Shoebox's page, you can see the inners of the steering column. It's tricky with lots of parts everywhere, so the more diagrams and figures you see, the better. Good luck.
