  • Need Some Serious Advice - Going to sell my car...

    Hey everyone,
I wish is I wasnt posting this right now. Its time to get rid of my pride and joy. I have put more than 30k into it over the 6 years that I have owned it and I know I am only going to get a small fraction of that back. But I really think its best.

Im going to try to list everything it has:

1991 RS Convertible - White with Grey Interior
    96 LT1/T56 combo
Custom made polished aluminum 18" Boyd Coddington Hot Rod 5's
Brand new clutch installed by JS performance
The T56 was rebuilt not even 100 miles ago with all the upgrades
    Aluminum Driveshaft
    9-Bolt Rear w/ a 3.45 Posi
    Sophn Control Arms
    Sophn Torque Arm
    Sophn Panhard Bar
    Poly bushings all around
    Eibach ProKit Springs
    Koni Reds Shocks/Struts
12" LS1 Brakes w/ Cross drilled and sloted rotors
    Edelbrock Strut Tower Brace
    Custom Cold Air intake
    Ported Intake Manifold
    Crane Gold 1.6 Roller Rockers
    PCM for less tune
    Hedman Headers
    ODB2 Compliant High Flow Cat
    Borla Stainless Steel CatBack
    Granettili Mass Airflow Sensor
All new seals/gaskets in the motor
    1 year old MSD Opti
1 year old GM water pump
    Z28 Hood w/ Bilisters
    Shaved Antenna
    Optima Red Top Battery
Phenoix Gold 2-Channel Amp powering CDT 6.5" Components in custom made kick panels
1 year old convertible top w/ glass rear window
    Grant GT Steering wheel
A-Pillar Dual gauge pod with Autometer fuel pressure gauge and shift light system
    Pro 5.0 Shifter
    4th Gen Seats
    New carpet
About 2 years ago I completely dismaneteld the car and had every part painted seprately and reassembled the car. There are are few blemishes now including a dent in the passenger side rear quarter.

There are a few problems with the car:

Passenger side window motor is on its way out
It keeps burning through alternators for some reason
Its has the normal tear in the drivers seat bolister
The top leaks during hard down pours
One of the electric cooling fans doesnt work
I tried to color sand the car a couple months ago and I sanded through the clear coat in a couple spots. A good detail/polish should make the dull spots go away or you can have a couple panels resprayed with clear coat to fix the problem correctly.

I really dont know how to go about figuring out an asking price. What do you guys think? I would hate to do it, but I am wondering if the cars parts are worth more than the car itself. I think I might be able to part the car out, return it to stock condition and sell it as a regular RS. Please help me out guys.

    Thanks in advance,
    Mark B

Did some math. Using average prices of used performance parts I have seen sell online, I can get about $7500 selling the drivetrain, suspension, wheels & exhaust. I figure I can get all of the stock parts from a junkyard for about $1000. That puts me around $6500 and a stock, sellable convertible. If I sell the car for KBB price, which is 2500-3000, I end up with about 9K. All of this doesnt happen for free obviously. It would take me about a month to do all of this. Now the question comes down to how much my time is worth to me.

I feel for you, but you have to do what's best for you. The reality is - you are the only one that can put a value on your time..

The market is in the crapper right now, so even if you do part it out, you may not get what your thinking. I hope you do, but it's tough now..

Good luck with what ever you decide.

            My advice -

You are not going to get much for it, even if you put tons of effort into puting it back to stock and parting it out.

So you get $7k for it... Do you really need the $7k? Is that $$ really going to make a difference? If so, then do it. If not, then just park the car and let it sit. You might decide to do something with it in a few years.

I think I drove my Z28 5 times this summer but It's nice knowing it is there. I'm in the same boat you are, it's not really worth enough to justify selling it.

For the most part, the money is going to be a down payment for a new camaro in feburary/march of next year. I probably dont have to sell my current car to get it, but I really cant convince myself that having two camaros makes any sense at all. The E-bay auction ended at $5100. I wont sell it for that. So either I just keep it and forget about the new car or I start taking it back to stock. I would LOVE to get the new car and keep this one, but after insurance, repairs, etc. I dont think it would be wise to do it. Afterall, im expecting to get engaged within the next year and probably start looking to get out of my condo and into a house. I know that I am going to regret getting rid of my car, but in the long run, I think its best.

I dunno with all that coming up I wouldn't buy the new Camaro. I'm young and haven't gone through all that fun just yet, but buying a home, getting engaged, and buying a new car is a ton of $$$$$$$$. However, I don't know your financial situation. Good luck though with all of it!
