Chilton's or Hayne's manuals for the F-body? I am thinking about attempting to replace the ignition key cylinder on my car by myself and am going to need a good set of instructions. Any opinions on the manuals?

(I was going to try the bypass thing suggested in my other thread, but would rather do the repair "right." I am just leary of messing somthing up by jury rigging the system that way. )

The Haynes manual did a pretty decent job helping with the head gasket repair. Chilton's I have never read or used. My two cents is exactly that. Not much "meat" to this post.

Thanks for the reply. I actually just sprung $29.99 for a subscription to Alldata Diy.com manual. I used a coupon code and got 5 years for $29.99 instead of the regualr one year for $26.99 Shows what a little searching around on Google can do for ya. So far it is pretty good. Shows step by step instructions right out of the GM service manual for the specific car, not just the Camaro, but the 2000 Model, V6 Camaro. I think I might just be able to do this job myself, if I can find the right tools. Speaking of which....what the heck is a torx? JK Man, my screw drivers and socket set just aren't going to be enough for this.

I vote for Haynes as a second choice to the factory service manuals.

Spring for the factory manual if you are going to keep the car for a couple years and work on it- even if you sell the car, you can use it as a sales incentive, or flea-bay it-

they haynes and chiltons i have for the 82-92 firebirds are pretty much the same, but i 2nd the factory service or alldata or mitchel also give this site a try, ur suppose to be a tech but they dont check, i havent been a tech in lil over 1.5 years

If you can get AllData or the factory manual, those are your best bets. However, having worked with both Haynes and Chilton's manuals, I'd wouldnt use a Haynes to wipe my butt unless I had to. Chilton's are SOOO much better, and have much better details. Unfortunately newer ones aren't as good, because Haynes bought them out.

the Chiltons uses diagrams found directly in the Haynes.......QED

Otherwise, HELM INC. has very extensive(expensive) shop manuals....

I have the Haynes manual for my 'bird. It's detailed on somethings decent enough (not a whole lot) and then terrible on others.

I wish they had some exploded views of assemblies that non-auto-mechanics could see how it's put together. It would be nice to know before taking apart something where all the o-rings and screws/bolts are.

Well, i got the job done. The All Data manual really helped alot. There were a few areas where the info wasn't quite accurate, but it made the job go fairly smoothly. I am glad that I will have it for 5 years. I'm sure I'll get alot of use out of it.
