  • Effects of DTCs?

Is there anywhere on the 'net that has a list of everything that each DTC does to the engine? i have done a not-so-extensive search but nothing has surfaced...

...does to an engine? DTC doesn't effect an engine...it tells you what components are failing/faulty that could effect the performance of an engine.

Example, p0420 - catalyst below threshold - simply means that o2 readings are equal between the upstream and downstream o2 sensors indicating a failing/failed catalytic convertor. The affects of a bad cat is raised emissions or very poor performance if the cat is clogged.

So, DTCs does nothing to an engine...it just points you in the right direction to figure out what's wrong with a certain failing component that could adversely effect an engine.

There are actually some things the computer might change or inhibit when certain DTCs are present. The best source I know explaining each is a factory service manual (your best friend ).
In the DTC list on my Tech Page there is some explanation of default actions for transmission DTCs only.

        Rob is right...pwned.

I recall a blinking SES, misfire, and the computer "reduced engine power".

LOL. Thank you very much Rob, do you know any place to buy a factory service manual? Would you recommend Helm Inc.?
          Thanks again

Helm prints all the manuals. The most thrifty solution is a used manual. You can find them on Ebay or other online sellers of used manuals.

Well that would explain why they are the most popular!

              Thanks again!
